It is open to students in grades 9-12, including those home-schooled, who are citizens of the U.S. or lawful permanent residents. The local contest will be held Saturday, January 11, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. The winner will advance to district competition and, if successful there, to state and national competition. Prize money and college scholarships are awarded. Post 82 plans to offer prizes to local winners. Cleveland County students who are interested should contact their high school or notify Post 82 contest chairperson Ludy Wilkie at ludy@shelby.net. The Broad River Genealogical Society, Kings Mtn The Broad River Genealogical Society is fortunate to have Steve Watts from the Schiele museum of Natural History of Gastonia speaking at 3:00pm on January 12, 2014 at the Neal Senior Center in Shelby. Mr. Watts will speaking on the Indians that lived here before this area was settled by the Europeans. Mr. Watts directs the Aboriginal Studies and the Traditional Outdoors Skills Programs at the Museum since 1984. He offers a series of primitive technology and classic camping workshops for museum professionals, teachers, and archaeologists. His replicas of prehistoric tools and weapons are featured in museums throughout the US. Mr. Watts presents workshops and aboriginal skills demonstrations thought-out North America and Europe. Refreshments will be available and admission is always free. Please park at the Back of the Neal Center. Gardner-Webb University Gardner-Webb Universities production of the 24 Hour Play Festivals will be January 24-25. Written, produced and directed by students, the 24 Hour Plays festivals begins on the 24th and will be performed on the 25th for audiences to see! Come and support the Theatre Arts Department! North Shelby School Teddy Bear's annual BBQ Chicken Dinner at North Shelby School on January 31, 2014 from 4:00pm until 7:30pm. All proceeds go to send graduating seniors to Myrtle Beach for a senior trip. Tickets are $10 includes 1/2 chicken with baked beans, slaw, roll and dessert. The meal is offered eat in or carry out. New Support Group for Depression and Bipolar Disorder The local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) will host regular, confidential, peer-led, self-help support group meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diagnosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer-to-peer support which is an important component of recovery from mental illness for many people. DBSA is the nation's leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses - depression and bipolar disorder.
