6A Daily News – Friday, December 6, 2013 Opinion Kelly/Griggs DAILY NEWS RED BLUFF TEHAMA COUNTY T H E V O I C E O F T E H A M A C O U NTY S I N C E 1 8 8 5 Greg Stevens, Publisher gstevens@redbluffdailynews.com Chip Thompson, Editor editor@redbluffdailynews.com Editorial policy The Daily News opinion is expressed in the editorial. The opinions expressed in columns, letters and cartoons are those of the authors and artists. State of Jefferson Editor: On a recent Saturday, our RV group from Napa area enjoyed an awesome tour of the Kelly/Griggs Victorian House. We would like to thank both guides for the opportunity and very enlightened tour. Once we entered those double doors it felt we were living in the 1880s. The house is so lovingly restored with nice artifacts. With their great stories and vast knowledge of the displays, we could have stayed the rest of the day listening to the guides. It is sad to know that Kelly/Griggs, like many organizations, is having a hard time recruiting new members and guides. This house is such a gem for Red Bluff, it would be a shame and so sad to have it sold or closed. Thank you once again to the guides for giving so much of their time. Betty de Hales, Shingletown Editor: My husband and I attended both meetings regarding the proposed succession from California. Also in attendance were a few opposed to the idea. Very few. Why do they oppose this? What's wrong with this being on a ballot? Many more are for this than against, no question about it. What's their problem? The majority I've talked to are in favor of pursuing this, we have rights too besides the control-freak liberals. They use the excuse of it costing $12,500 to put it on the ballot. A drop in the bucket with all the money wasted by all their special interests, etc. I would gladly contribute money to pay for this just to shut these nuts up. We should thank those willing to step up and tackle this complex task. We moved from Southern California, a small town of 5,000, and Los Angeles County was constantly throwing something on us that we didn't need. Commentary Attention getting Regarding the search engine Yahoo on the Internet, in the section devoted to people in the news, was this disclosure: "Kim Kardashian goes without underwear." It did not specify if this was an occasional wardrobe malfunction or a new trend. I have seen her name before and she appears to be today's answer to Paris Hilton, but I never understood what either did that made them newsworthy. This is of course another example of "too much information." I would rather read of President Obama's insurance mandates. However, perhaps Yahoo is a better judge of how to capture viewer's attention. Sources say Katie Couric, longtime anchor woman with ABC television, is to become "global anchor" for Yahoo. Perhaps she will add a little class to the medium and tone down the tabloid aspects of same. And speaking of getting attention, it is said that the Board of Supervisor's meetings are often poorly attended. Do you suppose that if they spiced up their meetings with hair-brained ballot measures it would at least afford them photo ops in the DN and thereby increase public attendance? Well they have done just that. After another presentation by secession advocate M. Baird Tuesday, the Board voted, 4 to 1, to spend an estimated $12,360 to put the matter on the ballot to see if the voting public is just as nuts as their elected officials. Attention Shelter for the Homeless proponents: The Board apparently has a slush fund that is need of instant dispersal. But, if it's not too late, and cooler heads prevail to void the ballot measure, I suggest, to enliven Board meetings, they consider dispensing with reaffirming their allegiance to the flag in favor of some banjo plucking or perhaps an impromptu wrestling match between a Supervisor and a State of Jefferson advocate. *** Dates probably overlooked: November was National Impotency Month.
