Students at the REACH program in Red Bluff look forward to the month of December each year with excitement and anticipation. This month marks the annual community wide effort to give the gift of kindness to students who have had a particularly rough start in life. The REACH program serves 9th- and 10th-graders who have experienced adverse conditions in their lives which have impacted their ability to do well in school. Regardless of their circumstances though, "each one of the students are smart and good and eager for a fresh start, a second chance at life," said teacher Judy Spencer. The students are too old to par- ticipate in Adopt-An-Angel, and too young to get jobs to buy gifts. Through the generosity of the community, they are able to experience the magic of kindness and giving. Each day, for the 15 days before Christmas, the students receive a gift from a Red Bluff business, agency, individual or club. On Monday, Dec. 2, Larry Champion, Tehama County superintendent of schools and Deputy Superintendent Charles Allen presented each student with a book – Chicken Soup For The Soul: It's Christmas!: 101 Joyful Stories about the Love, Fun and Wonder of the Holidays. "For homework during the next three weeks, that's what we read," Spencer said. "They love the heartwarming stories." In the following weeks they will also receive gifts from Red Bluff Rotary and Kiwanis clubs as well as Lassen Medical and caring individuals from the community who will teach them how to knit, cook with them and a variety of other activities. In the spirit of giving back, the students will be knitting scarves which they will then give to elderly patients at a local convalescent home. The month of December has a lasting impact on the students at REACH as well as the community. It's a truly heartwarming experience for all.
