GIRLS HOOPS West Valley 38 Red Bluff 48 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor The Lady Spartans used the energy from the opening night of the Holiday Classic and trans- ferred it onto the court, Wednes- day, in a 48-38 win over West Valley. Red Bluff will head to the winner’s bracket and a Friday night game, while the Lady Eagles play at 2:30 p.m. today in a consolation semifinal. The Lady Spartans jumped on their visitors early to race out to a 6-0 lead, before their adrena- line faded midway through the first quarter. After a slight lull, the Spar- tans got their second wind and outscored West Valley 19-8 in the second quarter to take an 8- point halftime lead. Ashley Brown was a disrup- tive force on the defensive end and point guard Kaitlann Weber had no problem taking over the reigns from the injured Lily Brose. Weber led Red Bluff with 13 points, pulled down nine rebounds and took care of the basketball. Roxanne Luppino chipped in with 12 points and the duo of Lottie Jones and Alana Hinkston handled the inside. Jones finished with six points and eight rebounds and Hinkston the reverse, eight points and six rebounds. Aubrey Mendonca led the Lady Eagles with 10 points, but was held to just a pair of free throws in the second half. In the waning minutes of the first half Weber tripled and Lup- pino sank a pair of free throws to push Red Bluff’s lead to eight. Lottie Jones opened up the second half by extending the Spartans’ lead to 10 and Red Bluff never looked back from there, leading by double-digits for nearly the remainder of the game. Press stings Lady Cardinals GIRLS HOOPS Corning 28 Enterprise 45 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor The Lady Cardinals had no answer for Enter- prise’s full court press, Wednesday, and fell 45- 28 in the opening round of the 2010 Holiday Classic in Red Bluff. Free throws kept Corning within striking distance in the first half, but the Lady Cardinals were held to a single Jennifer Devers free throw in the third quar- ter. The 13-1 third frame sealed the win for Enter- prise, who will meet Paradise at 4 p.m., Fri- day. Corning plays Etna today at 1 p.m. in the consolation bracket. While Enterprise’s press took Corning off their game it also gave back to the Cardinals in the form of fouls. Enterprise committed 13 first half fouls as Corning was in the bonus with 3:05 left in the first quarter and the double-bonus with 4:39 left in the second. Corning shot 11-for- 18 from the free throw line in the first half and trailed 27-19 at the break. But the press got to the Cardinals again when the second half started and when the Lady Cardinals did cre- ate a shot, it seemed as if a lid was on the bas- ket.
