The Federal Reserve said U.S. fac- tory output rose for the fifth straight month in November. A separate report showed that Senate overwhelmingly passed a $858 billion package that will extend tax cuts passed during the Bush administration for another two years. The measure now goes to the House, where it is expected to pass despite complaints by Democrats over what they see as overly generous estate tax rates for the rich. The unfinished tax bill made some investors pause. ‘‘No one is going to make any major planning decisions until this bill gets passed,’’ said Tim Speiss, a partner at EisnerAm- per LLP, a financial planning firm. ‘‘I’m working with a lot of companies who are post- average fell 19.07 or 0.2 per- cent, to 11,457.47. Bing recently started to power Yahoo’s U.S. search engine, whose 16 percent share ★★ ★ ranks second to Google. Despite the huge gap, Microsoft has been encour- aged by the progress it has made since it retooled its search engine and rebrand- ed it as Bing in June 2009. Bing has about 90 million regular users now, up from 27 million when it made its debut, according to Satya Nadella, a senior vice presi- dent in Microsoft’s online services division. Some of the new fea- tures unveiled Wednesday provided a glimpse at how Microsoft hopes to capital- ize on a competitive advan- tage that it gained in Octo- ber when Facebook agreed to give Bing greater access to the 500 million people who have set up accounts GREAT GIFTS For the Working Man, Hunter, Cowboy or Cowgirl. Microsoft has been chum- my with Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, since it paid $240 million for a 1.6 percent stake in the privately held company three years ago. Microsoft believes its Facebook relationship will become an increasingly important factor in the search market as people realize how helpful it is to see the recommendations of their friends when they’re looking for information on the Web. The breadth of those recommendations is rapidly growing as people spend more time on Face- book and become more comfortable sharing their preferences. In one upcoming change, if you are searching on Bing while signed into your Facebook account, some of the links listed in the results might include notation showing that one of your Facebook friends liked the website or a prod- uct. Bing also will draw from Facebook when pro- cessing requests about peo- ple. In some instances, the results will show whether the Bing user making the search request shares any common Facebook friends with the person being researched.
