O 20, 2010 A Halloween Ghost Story The Red Ghost Camel Atop Hi Jolly’s Monument The Red Ghost was an ex- ceptionally large camel turned loose in the desert to fend for itself and the figure on its back was or had been, a man. In 1883 the story goes that a woman was trampled by a huge red animal and on his back rode what appeared to be a man or the devil. Later miners had their tents tram- pled and heard the thunder- ing hoof beats. The legend started and the sightings lasted for 10 years. Finally a prospec- tor fired at the Red Ghost. It escaped but something fell from its back. Dis- covered was a man’s head, dry and withered but with flesh and hair still on it. Freight waggoner’s told of the Red Ghost tipping over their wagons. Mizor Hastings, a rancher, saw the large camel eating his garden, shot and killed him. They found a patchwork of rawhide straps, which had scarred its back deeply. The bindings were such that the man tied there could not pos- sibly have tied them himself nor he alone could have knotted them. It had to have been a white man that tied him there; Indians would not have wasted the camel meat. No one knows if he was tied there alive, tied there for dev- iltry or maybe revenge, or whether it was some lunatic’s hideous scheme of suicide, or merely an ugly piece of hu- mor. Updates from the Hi Jolly Cemetery. The Hi Jolly Cemetery has been hit by vandals and thieves. WiGo Communication atop Hi Jolly’s monument was broken off and stolen sometime during the night of Monday, Oct. 4, 2010. This act is more than mere vandalism; it is a disregard of National history. Legend has it that the camel atop the monument is a silhouette of the Red Ghost. The Red Ghost was one of scores of camels first brought to this Country by the U.S. Army in hopes that they would be practical as pack animals in the deserts of the South- west. The experiment was declared a failure and the camels were sold to pri- vate operators who in turn found them impractical and turned them loose to run wild. For the person or persons that mali- ciously wrenched our camel legend of the Red Ghost off the top of Hi Jolly’s monument, remember this story and when you are tight in your bed, those owl sounds you hear are going to sound a lot like the Red Ghost and you will wonder if you are the one tied to his back now. Bring him home to guard Hi Jolly’s grave site as he has done since 1936 and get him off your back. Computer Sales & Accessories Computer Repair Center Cell Phone Service Provider & Accessories 395 N.
