Greinke ends skid, beats Athletics Athletics 3 Kansas City 11 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Zack Greinke picked up his first victory in nearly a month and Wil- son Betemit homered and drove in four runs to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 11-3 on Tuesday night. Kila Kaaihue also homered and drove in three runs while Mike Aviles hit a three-run shot. He had three hits and scored three runs and has homered in back-to-back games after going 316 at- bats without a home run. Betemit, who had three hits, delivered run-produc- ing singles in the first and second and hit a two-run homer in the third. Ka’aihue homered in the first with Betemit aboard. His single in the second scored Billy But- ler. Kansas City scored all its runs with two outs and in the first three innings. That is the most runs the Royals have scored in a game since beating Hous- ton 15-7 on June 15. Greinke (9-12), the 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner, claimed his first victory since Aug. 17. He pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the first by getting Mark Ellis to ground into an inning ending double play. Greinke gave up three runs on six hits and four walks in seven innings. Gio Gonzalez (14-9), who had a 1.75 ERA in winning his previous five starts, faced 16 batters, 10 reached base on seven hits and three walks and seven scored before he was replaced by Boof Bonser in the third. Bonser gave up two home runs in the third. The A’s scored all their runs in the sixth with Lan- don Powell and Jack Cust singling in runs. The other run scored on an Aki Iwa- mura ground out. Pads win, top Rockies DENVER (AP) — Jon Garland threw seven sharp innings, pinch-hitter Matt Stairs hit a two-run homer in the eighth and the San Diego Padres hung on to beat the Colorado Rockies 7-6 on Tuesday night to maintain their slim lead in the NL West. The Padres came into the contest with a half- game lead over the Giants, who played Los Angeles later in the night. The Rockies, who had their 10-game winning streak halted the night before, tumbled again, dropping them 3 1/2 games behind San Diego. They remain 3 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the NL wild-card race after the Braves were beaten 6-0 by Washington. San Diego tweaked the lineup Tuesday, inserting Aaron Cunningham into the leadoff spot. The results were immediate as Cunningham finished with three hits, including a dou- ble, and two runs scored. Miguel Tejada and Ryan Ludwick each added RBI singles in the first. Tejada has now driven in five runs through two of the three games in this pivotal NL West matchup. David Eckstein’s two-run double in the fourth staked the Padres to a 4-0 lead and they made it hold up despite a rally by Colorado. Stairs added some insur- ance with his major- league best 22nd pinch- hit homer of his career. Garland (14-11) snapped a three-game slide, allowing three runs — one earned — and four hits. He also helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a dou- ble. Davis got a first half goal and then a pair of second half goals moments apart. Coach Teresa Lamb said Huntley communicated well with the Cardinals’ defense. Lamb credited Julia Van Doorn for attacking the ball, Sam Bobadilla for good, aggressive stickwork and the play of Rachelle Zuppan and Silvia Diaz. Lanie Fultz made a late game stop from the sweeper position to prevent another Davis goal. The forward line of Anna Nelson, Mayra Dieva, Bobadilla and Shelby Long had a strong first half.
