T8 WHATS UP! May 7 - 13, 2023 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The Mother" (2023) Never get between a mother and her kids, especially this one: Netflix's newest action thriller flick, "The Mother," pre- mieres on the streamer Friday, May 12. Jennifer Lopez ("Shot- gun Wedding," 2022) stars as the film's titular mother, a dead- ly assassin who gave up her daughter, Zoe (Lucy Paez, "The Exorcism of Carmen Farias," 2021), years before for her own protection. Now, with her daughter's life — and her own — in grave danger, she embarks on an action-packed, globe- spanning journey to keep her safe from a group of dangerous men from her old life. From di- rector Niki Caro ("McFarland, USA," 2015), "The Mother" fea- tures a screenplay by Misha Green ("Lovecraft Country"), Andrea Berloff ("Straight Outta Compton," 2015) and Peter Craig ("Top Gun: Maverick," 2022). The film also stars Jo- esph Fiennes ("Shakespeare in Love," 1998), Paul Raci ("Sound of Metal," 2019), Gael Garcia Bernal ("Mozart in the Jungle") and Omari Hardwick ("Pow- er"). "Queer Eye" - Season 7 The Fab 5 are back and ready to give more deserving, everyday Americans life-changing trans- formations when Season 7 of the heartfelt, 10-time Emmy-win- ning reality series, "Queer Eye," premieres on Netflix Friday, May 12. For six seasons, the co- hosts have traveled through small-town America, helping bring a little bit of fabulous to people who deserve it by help- ing them revamp their home, their relationship with food, their mindset, their style and their personal grooming habits. Now, this reboot of the original series from the early 2000s — which took on Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Tex- as in previous seasons, in addi- tion to international excursions to Japan and the town of Yass in New South Wales — is taking on New Orleans. As they tear their way through the Big Easy, design specialist Bobby Berk, fashion phenom Tan France, cooking connoisseur Antoni Porowski, culture/lifestyle coach Karamo Brown and grooming extraordi- naire Jonathan Van Ness help a new cast of heroes create a new life for themselves — with a spe- cial surprise or two for them along the way. WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "The Muppets Mayhem" Rock on with the Muppets on Disney+ once again when the new 10-episode family comedy series, "The Muppets May- hem," premieres Wednesday, May 10. After decades of rock- ing success and world tours, The Electric Mayhem Band has accomplished everything they could hope for — except for re- leasing their own album. Now, the band — including Dr. Teeth (Bill Barretta, "The Muppets," 2011) on vocals and keyboards, Animal (Eric Jacobson, "Sesa- me Street") on drums, Sgt. Floyd Pepper (Matt Vogel, "Ses- ame Street") on vocals and bass, Janice (David Rudman, "Mup- pets Most Wanted," 2014) on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot (David Goelz, "Fraggle Rock") on saxophone and Lips (Peter Linz, "Bear in the Big Blue House") on trumpet — is em- barking on an epic, music-filled journey to record their very first studio album. With the help of Nora (Lilly Singh, "Bad Moms," 2016), a driven young music executive, the old school Muppet band learns how to navigate the world of modern music as they bring their hit sound to the people at home. Based on characters created by Jim Henson ("The Muppet Show"), "The Muppets May- hem" is created by Barretta, Adam F. Goldberg ("The Gold- bergs") and Jeff Yorkes ("The Return of Return of the Jedi: 30 Years and Counting," 2013) and directed by Matt Sohn ("The Office") and Robert Cohen ("Somebody Somewhere"). Tahj Mowry ("Smart Guy"), Anders Holm ("Workaholics") and Saara Chaudry ("Holly Hobbie") also star. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "The Great" - Season 3 The critically acclaimed, semi- historical comedy-drama series "The Great" returns to Hulu with its third season Friday, May 12, and this time the royal couple is making it work (sort of). A loose, comedic retelling of the story of 18th-century Russian Monarch Catherine the Great, portrayed by Elle Fanning ("Su- per 8," 2011), the series follows the young Catherine's life from rural outsider to Russia's lon- gest-reigning female ruler and her marriage to Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult, "Renfield," 2023). This season, as Catherine and Peter attempt to make their marriage work after enduring a series of seemingly insurmount- able problems, Catherine starts making a name for herself across international borders, and Peter busies himself with fathering, hunting and culinary adventures. While Peter grap- ples with his own perceived fail- ures as a leader — personified by his late father, Peter the Great, played by Jason Isaacs ("Operation Mincemeat," 2021) — Catherine learns that some- times even great leaders need to compromise to make progress. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara ("The Favourite," 2018), "The Great" also stars Phoebe Fox ("Eye in the Sky," 2015), Adam Godley ("The Umbrella Acade- my"), Gwilym Lee ("Bohemian Rhapsody," 2018), Charity Wakefield ("A Midsummer Night's Dream," 2017), Douglas Hodge ("Lost in Space"), Sacha Dhawan ("Iron Fist"), Bayo Gb- adamosi ("War of the Worlds") and Belinda Bromilow ("Doctor Doctor"). WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "City on Fire" Get to the bottom of a fiery mys- tery with the new Apple TV+ se- ries "City on Fire," based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, when it debuts its first three epi- sodes Friday, May 12. The re- mainder of the series' eight epi- sodes air weekly on Fridays. On July 4, 2003, NYU student Sa- matha (Chase Sui Wonders, "Bodies Bodies Bodies," 2022) is shot dead in Central Park. Alone, with no witnesses and with very little physical evidence left be- hind, her case proves to be a tough investigation. While her friend Charlie (Wyatt Oleff, "I Am Not Okay With This") is struggling to cope with the death of his father on 9/11 two years earlier, Samantha's death sets him off on a mission to fig- ure out what happened to her, no matter the cost. As the mystery surrounding her death deepens, Samantha is revealed to be the crucial connection between a series of mysterious, citywide fires, New York's downtown music scene and a wealthy, up- town real estate family. From writers and showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, both of "Nancy Drew" and "The Runaways," "City on Fire" is di- rected by Jesse Peretz ("Girls"), Liz Garbus ("What Happened, Miss Simone?," 2015) and Haifaa Al-Mansour ("Mayfair Witch- es"). Jemima Kirke ("Conversa- tions With Friends"), Nico Tor- torella ("Younger"), Ashley Zukerman ("Succession"), Xavi- er Clyde ("5 South," 2020), Max Milner ("The Dirt," 2019), Alex- andra Doke ("Grey's Anatomy"), Omid Abtahi ("My Own Worst Enemy"), Kathleen Munroe ("Patriot") and John Cameron Mitchell ("The Good Fight") round out the ensemble cast.
