T4 WHATS UP! May 7 - 13, 2023 REAL TV BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT TV Media Tale of triumph: Michael J. Fox ("Spin City") tells his own story, in his own words, without a detail to be spared. An honest and intimate look at the actor's life, "STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie" premieres Friday, May 12, on Apple TV+. According to the streamer, the film tells the "improbable tale of an undersized kid [...] who rose to the heights of star- dom in 1980s Hollywood." And rise, he did. In the past four decades, Fox has starred in endless titles, both on television and in mov- ies. At 15, Fox co-starred in the Canadian sitcom "Leo and Me," and his career launched forward from there. In 1982, he starred in "Class of 1984," and by 1985, Fox had reached the heights of fame with roles in hit films "Back to the Future" and "Teen Wolf," both premiering that year. His impressive list of credits grew through the '90s and the aughts, including a stint voicing the tit- ular mouse in "Stuart Little" (1999). Lately, Fox has been pur- suing mostly television work, including a two-episode run on "The Good Fight." Of course, behind his accom- plished public life, there is a big- ger story still to tell. "STILL" is the first documentary to be granted an exclusive, inside look at the actor's personal life – past the "nostalgic thrills and cinematic gloss," as AppleTV says, to see "what happens when an incurable optimist confronts an incurable disease." Diagnosed with Parkinson's at only 29 years old, Fox has not only been managing but finding silver linings – even among his travails. Using documentary and ar- chival footage, along with scripted elements, Fox tells his own triumphant story as only he could: with drama, comedy and romance weaved through- out. From the past, then "Back to the Future," Michael J. Fox shares it all in "STILL: A Mi- chael J. Fox Movie," premiering Friday, May 12, on Apple TV+. Popcorn praise: Another year of film and television has passed, with hits like "Avatar: The Way of the Water," "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Yellow- stone" gathering us in front of screens big and small. To cele- brate talent from Pandora to Hawkins, Indiana, join MTV for the "2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards," airing live Sunday, May 7. The event will be hosted by Drew Barrymore ("Santa Clari- ta Diet"), who is no stranger to captivating a live audience. Cur- rently, Barrymore hosts her own television talk show, "The Drew Barrymore Show," but the star has graced the "MTV" stage many times during her impres- sive career, having been nomi- nated for a total of nine MTV Movie and TV awards in the past, taking home three "Golden Popcorn" wins. Last year, Barry- more even received a nomina- tion for her fledgling talk show. This year, however, MTV no- ticed a specific trend, stating in a news release that: "Horror and sci-fi tropes made big waves this year, with top contenders [...] bringing telepathic teens and zombie-like creatures to our screens." Looking at the nominations, it's clear to see a fantastical frenzy, with both "Stranger Things" and "The Last of Us" nominated for Best Show, along with some other "out of this world" favorites. Both also boast nominations for individual performances with- in, as Sadie Sink ("Stranger Things") is a top contender for Best Performance in a Show and Bella Ramsey ("The Last of Us") has been nominated for their Breakthrough Perfor- mance. Other nominations for Best Show include "The White Lo- tus," "Wednesday" and "Yellow- jackets," while recognized tele- vision performances include Selena Gomez ("Only Murders in the Building"), Riley Keough ("Daisy Jones & The Six") and Emma D'Arcy ("House of the Dragon"). Keke Palmer ("Nope"), Flor- ence Pugh ("Don't Worry Dar- ling"), Michael B. Jordan ("Creed III") and Tom Cruise ("Top Gun: Maverick") are all nominated for Best Perfor- mance in a Movie, while The Bear from "Cocaine Bear" may just swipe Best Villain. Best Movie, Best Docu-Reali- ty Series and more will all be awarded at the 2023 MTV Mu- sic and TV Awards, broadcast- ing live from the Barker Hanger in Los Angeles Sunday, May 7, on MTV. Summer in session: The summer is rolling in fast, bring- ing more "Summer House" along with it. This time, the se- ries heads to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, joining a group of friends for a red-hot season of drama, love triangles and gos- sip. With an all-new destination and some new faces to match, "Summer House: Martha's Vineyard" premieres Sunday, May 7, on Bravo. "Get ready to get 'lit' and to 'marinate on every memory from this summer'," says Bravo, welcoming its latest house guests: 12 close-knit, vacation- loving pals, all ready for a wild and tumultuous summer. Known for its "pristine beaches, romantic sailboats, colorful gingerbread cottages" (per Bravo) and for a unique cultural identity, Martha's Vineyard is also known to be one of the first beach destina- tions where Black Americans could not only vacation but also own property. Over 100 years later, the Vineyard con- tinues to welcome all, acting as the perfect summertime spot for this group of young, Black professionals. The show welcomes newly married Jasmine and Silas, along with some of their closest friends – from frat brothers to old Playmates – as they move into their massive summer home. The Vineyard will play host to endless, exclusive activi- ties, decadent dinners and more, acting as the perfect beachy backdrop for love trian- gles, fights and fallouts to sizzle under the sun. Make sure to bring your sun- screen when "Summer House: Martha's Vineyard" premieres, Sunday, May 7, on Bravo. Michael J. Fox in "STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie"
