T8 WHATS UP! January 22 - 28, 2023 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "You People" (2023) "Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris makes his feature film directori- al debut with "You People," pre- miering Friday, Jan. 27, on Netf- lix. Co-written by Barris and star Jonah Hill ("Don't Look Up," 2021), this romantic comedy film follows new couple Ezra (Hill) and Amira (Lauren London, "The Game") while they learn to navigate their tricky family dy- namics. Ezra and Amira find themselves examining modern love as they grapple with clash- ing cultures, societal expecta- tions and generational differenc- es with their families, while tak- ing their relationship forward. "You People" stars Julia Louis- Dreyfus ("Seinfeld") and David Duchovny ("The X-Files") as Ez- ra's parents, Shelley and Arnold, while Amira's parents, Akbar and Fatima, are played by Eddie Murphy ("Dreamgirls," 2006) and Nia Long ("Big Momma's House," 2000). The film also stars Sam Jay ("Bust Down"), Travis Bennett ("Dave"), Molly Gordon ("Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty"), Deon Cole ("Black-ish"), Andrea Savage ("Tulsa King"), Rhea Perlman ("Cheers") and Mike Epps ("The Upshaws"). WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "Shotgun Wedding" (2022) The classic vow "'Til death do us part" gets put to the test in the new action comedy "Shotgun Wedding," premiering Friday, Jan. 27, on Prime Video. Gather- ing together their large and lov- able (but highly opinionated) families, Darcy (Jennifer Lopez, "Hustlers," 2019) and Tom (Josh Duhamel, "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers") head to the tropics for the ultimate destina- tion wedding. But, as if their im- pending nuptials and some last- minute cold feet aren't enough, they suddenly find their lives in danger when the entire wedding party is taken hostage. Teaming up, Darcy and Tom work to save the day and save their loved ones — assuming they don't kill each other first. Directed by Jason Moore ("Pitch Perfect," 2012) with a screenplay penned by Mark Hammer ("Two Night Stand," 2014), "Shotgun Wed- ding" also stars Jennifer Coolidge ("The White Lotus"), Lenny Kravitz ("The Butler," 2013), Sonia Braga ("Kiss of the Spider Woman," 1985), Cheech Marin ("Maya and the Three"), Selena Tan ("Crazy Rich Asians," 2018), D'Arcy Carden ("A League of Their Own"), Cal- lie Hernandez ("The Flight At- tendant"), Desmin Borges ("You're The Worst") and Steve Coulter ("Leverage: Redemp- tion"). WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "The 1619 Project" Created by Pulitzer Prize-win- ning journalist Nikole Hannah- Jones ("The ReidOut") and The New York Times Magazine, Hu- lu's new, six-part limited docuse- ries, "The 1619 Project," pre- mieres on the streaming plat- form Thursday, Jan. 26. In keep- ing with the spirit of the original long-form journalism project, "the series seeks to reframe the country's history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Ameri- cans at the very center of [the] national narrative" (per Hulu). Across its six episodes — titled "Democracy," "Race," "Music," "Capitalism," "Fear" and "Jus- tice" — all of which are adapted from essays from The New York Times No. 1 bestselling "The 1619 Project: A New Origin Sto- ry," the series examines how the legacy of slavery shapes differ- ent aspects of contemporary American life. Hosted by Han- nah-Jones, "The 1619 Project" is directed by Roger Ross Williams ("The Apollo," 2019). The series is a Lionsgate Production in as- sociation with One Story Up Productions, Harpo Films and The New York Times. Episodes air weekly on Fridays thereafter. Following his own personal tragedy, grieving ther- apist Jimmy, played by "How I Met Your Mother" star Jason Segel, copes in a wildly unpro- fessional way: he starts telling his patients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and his ethics, Jimmy's new ap- proach finds him making huge, tumultuous changes to people's lives — including his own. Cre- ated by Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence, the duo behind Ap- ple's award-winning series "Ted Lasso," "Shrinking" is written by Goldstein, Lawrence and Segel. The series cast is rounded out by Harrison Ford ("1923"), Jessica Williams ("Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore," 2022), Mi- chael Urie ("Ugly Betty") and Christa Miller ("Scrubs"). The wolves are out and howling once again, calling for the re- turn of banshees, werecoyotes, hellhounds, kitsunes and every other shapeshifter hiding in the night. Only a werewolf like Scott McCall (Tyler Posey, "Alone," 2020), now all grown up and still an alpha, can gather new allies and reunite trusted friends to fight back against what could be the most power- ful and deadliest enemy they've ever faced. Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and MGM, "Teen Wolf: The Movie" is written by original series cre- ator Jeff Davis and directed by Russell Mulcahy ("In Like Fly- nn," 2018).
