T7 BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media I f you're an NFL fan, you probably know Michael Griffin and Brian Orakpo from their days as Pro Bowlers, back when they were teammates and playing for the Tennessee Titans. If you're more into food shows, you might know them as the cupcake shop owners featured in the 2021 Food Network series "Cupcake Guys Training Camp." That series gave us a glimpse of their lives after the NFL, as they and partner "Little Bryan" Hynson set out to help other as- piring bakers achieve their dreams of entrepreneurship. But it is their own attempts at run- ning a successful cupcake shop that are chronicled in the new series "The Cupcake Guys," which arrived on The Roku Channel on Wednesday, Jan. 18, and is now available for stream- ing. How do you go from defensive sacks to piping bags? After retir- ing, Griffin and Orakpo were seeking entrepreneurial options that would allow them to take a more hands-on approach with their investments. They also shared a mutual love of cup- cakes — specifically, those from bakery chain Gigi's Cupcakes, which was originally based in Nashville, Tennessee. In a 2021 interview with Forbes, Orakpo explained, "We wanted to get a jumpstart on the next part of our career while we were playing. We looked at a few different options, and we decid- ed the best thing for us to do was what we loved to do — eat sweets and make sweets. We put two and two together." In establishing a Gigi's Cup- cakes franchise in their home- town of Austin, Texas, the three friends were involved in every step of the process, with Griffin handling baking duties, Orakpo wielding the piping bags and Hynson manning the front counter. This, along with inter- actions with customers and brief glimpses of their lives away from the shop, is what you can expect to see in the Roku original series, which is executive produced by "Good Morning America" co- host Michael Strahan (himself a former NFL star).
