LSU OUTLOOK Texas A&M will open the season ranked No. 6 in The Associated Press poll after mixed results in 2021. The Aggies had their winning streak against Arkansas snapped at nine games with a 20-10 loss, but Coach Jimbo Fisher also became the first of Nick Saban's former assistants to beat him when Texas A&M upset Alabama 41-38. In the end the Aggies finished 8-4, which is not why Fisher was lured away from Florida State and was a downer after the previous season's 9-1 record. The Aggies have just nine starters back, but Fisher and his staff added the nation's No. 1-ranked recruiting class and have accumulated the talent to compete for SEC and national championships. A key for Texas A&M is finding the right starting quarterback, where the top candidates are sophomore Haynes King and junior Max Johnson, a transfer from LSU. King was the starter the first two games last season before suffering a broken leg against Colorado. Zach Calzada did an admirable job as his replacement, but transferred to Auburn. Johnson started 12 games for LSU last season and completed 225 of 373 passes for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns. Fisher may wait to name a starter until the opener against Sam Houston State.
