T22 WHATS UP! March 13 - 19, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert After the Russians won gold in team figure skating last week, it was revealed that one of their top competitors had failed a drug test before the Games even began. While that case in being appealed, none of the teams are getting their medals, including the Americans, who finished second. As a consolation gift, "Team USA will reportedly re- ceive Olympic torches." Yes, that's the smart thing to do when you've really pissed someone off: Hand them a torch. Evident- ly, they were out of Olympic pitchforks. JPMorgan Chase just opened "a lounge in the metaverse." Awe- some, because when I heard there was a virtual world where you could be anything and do anything, my first thought was, "Boy, I hope I can still go to the bank." Do the DMV next! The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon The world's top producer of mozzarella cheese says that it expects shipping delays to last all year. Meanwhile, Papa John's released a statement that said, "Yeah, this doesn't affect us whatsoever." President Biden went to Pitts- burgh to talk about the need for his infrastructure bill. And thankfully no one was seriously injured, but just hours before his arrival, a bridge in Pittsburgh ac- tually collapsed. Biden didn't even give his speech, he just stuck his head out of his car win- dow and [said], "Told ya!" The Bidens announced a new addition to the family: a 2-year- old tabby cat named Willow. Yeah, the president is thrilled to have a cat. Now he can finally say he got something fixed. The Late Late Show With James Corden [Super Bowl] celebrations are already underway here in Los Angeles. Earlier today [Feb. 15], the famous Hollywood sign was temporarily changed to say "Rams House." Yeah, and in keeping with tradition here in L.A., that "house" is a two-bed, one-bath that costs $9 million. The Oscars have announced that they will give Twitter users a vote during the awards cere- mony. It's true, people can vote on their favorite films that were released in 2021, even if the film wasn't nominated for Oscar. The film with the most votes will be recognized during the broadcast — it's "Spider-Man." Jimmy Kimmel Live! [S]ome of the [Winter Olym- pics] events had to be cancelled yesterday because of snow. They had been using artificial snow up until this point, but they only got a couple inches of real snow [and] that was enough for them to postpone women's downhill and delay the giant slalom and the women's slopestyle events. That's right: Snow disrupted the Winter Olympics. This is like water disrupting a swim meet. It doesn't make sense. Late Night With Seth Meyers The pharmaceutical company Moderna announced yesterday that it has begun testing its Omi- cron-specific coronavirus vac- cine. Feels like that might be out- dated by the time it's ready. That's like hearing that Apple is working on an iPhone 7. In honor of the park's 30th anni- versary and Women's History Month in March, Disneyland Paris announced yesterday that Minnie Mouse will wear a dark blue and black polka-dotted pantsuit designed by Stella Mc- Cartney. Unfortunately, that still won't make up for the fact that you brought your wife to Paris and then took her to Disneyland. A representative of the anti-drug group DARE criticized the HBO show "Euphoria" in a new inter- view and said it glorifies narcot- ics use among high school stu- dents. But realistically, how many teens can afford HBO and narcotics? McDonald's is set to begin sell- ing a new item, consisting of a chicken sandwich, Big Mac and Filet-O-Fish all in one bun, called "Land, Air and Sea," as opposed to its original name, "Bathroom, Hospital, Cemetery." LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media The next 'Rookie': ABC is hoping to enlist a new "Rookie" for its prime-time lineup. The network is working on a potential spinoff of its fourth- year cop drama, "The Rookie," which stars Nathan Fillion ("Castle"). Surprisingly, viewers won't have to wait long to get a glimpse of what that spinoff, and an expanded "Rookie" universe, might look like. Niecy Nash of "Claws" and "Reno 911!" fame is set to guest star in two upcoming episodes of "The Rookie," and her two- episode arc will serve as a back- door pilot — that's when a spi- noff concept is pitched through an episode (or two, in this case) of an existing series. Nash will play the role of sin- gle mom Simone Clark, "a force of nature, the living embodiment of a dream deferred — and the oldest rookie in the FBI Acade- my" (per ABC). In the episodes, LAPD Officer John Nolan (Fil- lion) and the Los Angeles divi- sion of the FBI enlist Clark's help when one of her former students is suspected of terrorism follow- ing an explosion at a local power station. "I'm so excited to guest star on 'The Rookie' and bring Simone Clark to life," Nash said in a statement announcing her up- coming role. "She is a spirited and spicy fish out of water. The cast is amazing and I can't wait to play!" A "Rookie" spinoff would be a solid move for ABC, especially since franchises are a big part of today's broadcast network land- scape. CBS has several FBI and NCIS shows (not to mention the "CSI" revival); CW has the Arrow- verse, its "All American" shows, and a number of sequels in the works; Fox has the 911 franchise; and NBC has three Chicago and Law & Order series. ABC has "Grey's Anatomy" and its spi- noff, "Station 19," which are both renewed for the 2022-23 season, but that's pretty much it … unless ABC proceeds to make a new franchise out of "The Rookie," of course. Munn's the word: Produc- tion is already underway on AMC's "Tales of the Walking Dead," and we now know that "The Newsroom" actress Olivia Munn is one of several actors who have boarded the new an- thology series. AMC recently revealed that Munn, Danny Ramirez ("The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"), Loan Chabanol ("The Trans- porter Refueled," 2015), Embeth Davidtz ("The Morning Show") and Jessie T. Usher ("The Boys") have joined a cast that already includes Terry Crews ("Brook- lyn Nine-Nine"), Parker Posey ("Lost in Space"), Jillian Bell ("Brittany Runs a Marathon," 2019), Anthony Edwards ("ER") and Poppy Liu ("Sunnyside"). Few details have been revealed about any of the characters they'll play, or how many epi- sodes they'll appear in. "Olivia, Danny, Loan, Embeth and Jessie are the latest massive talents that will bring new worlds of 'The Walking Dead' to life with big, daring, different, emotional, shocking, scary and crazy stories," franchise execu- tive producer and writer Scott Gimple said in a statement. "We're excited for them to come walk with us." Showrunner Channing Pow- ell, also a writer and producer on "The Walking Dead" and "Fear the Walking Dead," stated, "Somehow we have lucked into the greatest cast — Olivia, Jessie, Embeth, Danny, Loan. We've been hoping these episodes will feel like unique, little films, and with this range of actors, we are well on our way." The third spinoff in the fran- chise, "Tales of the Walking Dead" is a stand-alone series about new and familiar charac- ters within the "Walking Dead" universe. Franchise producer/ director Michael E. Satrazemis will direct the first of six epi- sodes with his "Fear the Walking Dead" cinematographer Adam Suschitzky ("Yellowstone"). From TGS to CBS: Comedi- an Tracy Morgan ("The Last O.G.") is heading to CBS for one night only. Morgan, who got his start in the Fox prime-time series "Mar- tin" before his seven seasons in NBC's "Saturday Night Live" (and seven seasons on "30 Rock" after that), will guest star in an upcoming episode of "The Neighborhood." The episode is scheduled to air March 28 on CBS, and it will mark Morgan's first appearance in a live-action network sitcom since "30 Rock" ended in January 2013. In "The Neighborhood" epi- sode titled "Welcome to Bro Money, Bro Problems," Morgan will play Curtis Butler, the often- mentioned younger brother of lead character Calvin Butler (Cedric the Entertainer, "Bar- bershop," 2002). Calvin is re- sentful of his mother's relation- ship with Curtis, a super lottery winner who loves spending his money and showering people with over-the-top gifts. "Cedric the Entertainer and Tracy Morgan as brothers?" pos- ited showrunner Meg DeLoatch ("Family Matters") in a brief statement. "[We're] looking for- ward to one of the funniest fami- ly dinners in history." Morgan's guest appearance in "The Neighborhood" also marks a reunion with Cedric the Enter- tainer as the two standup comics previously worked together on 2014's "Top Five," starring, writ- ten and directed by Chris Rock ("Spiral," 2021). Niecy Nash to star in spinoff of "The Rookie" STARS ON SCREEN
