March 13 - 19, 2022 WHATS UP! T7 BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media O scar-nominated actor and Emmy-winning host Stanley Tucci ("The Lovely Bones," 2009) has had viewers yearning for a return trip to Italy since Season 1 of his show premiered last year. Happily, CNN's "Stan- ley Tucci: Searching for Italy" returns this Sunday, March 13. Season 1 treated fans to tanta- lizing shots of pizza in Naples and forkfuls of carbonara in Rome, to name a few of the foods and food-producing regions profiled in the initial six epi- sodes. So what will Tucci ex- plore in Season 2? CNN has been rather tight- lipped about the locales, but on- line sleuths believe Venice, Tu- rin and the regions of Valle D'Aosta and Umbria are among the likely destinations, based on sightings of Tucci and his crew in Italy, as well as the travel pho- tos found scattered amid Tucci's popular cocktail tutorials on Ins- tagram. When it premiered on Valen- tine's Day last year, "Searching for Italy" became an instant hit. About 1.5 million viewers tuned in to the premiere, and slightly more the following week, prompting CNN to renew the series for a second season. It would be unfair to attribute the show's success to good tim- ing, given that it premiered dur- ing COVID-19's winter surge in early 2021. In truth, the actor's eminently watchable journey through Italy's culinary history and culture is the kind of clever, slick-paced, food-travel hybrid show that naturally invites com- parisons with another culinary travelogue, "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown." Tucci has ac- knowledged Bourdain's influ- ence, but he's also quick to stress the differences between the two series (and hosts). "I knew Tony [Bourdain] a bit," Tucci recounted in an inter- view with The Hollywood Re- porter. "He was an incredible mind, a real raconteur and a great explorer. The show that we are doing is distinctly different than his: I am not nearly as ad- venturous as Tony was, not nearly. Or as brave. But what he did is open the doors to all of us who were interested in food, and travel, to explore in our own ways. He was, and still is, and al- ways will be a hero of mine." Tucci, a third-generation Ital- ian-American and the creative mind behind the 1996 film "Big Night," also said "the idea of 'Searching for Italy' was some- thing I have had in [my] mind for a very long time." Now that the idea has been converted to reali- ty, fans of the engaging bon-vi- vant are clearly hungering for more.
