T7 BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media I n case you missed it, the third season of "Tourna- ment of Champions" — dubbed "Tournament of Champions III" or "TOC III" — kicked off last Sunday (Feb. 27) on Food Network and dis- covery+. And if you DID miss it, you can still catch up by streaming the two-hour premiere on dis- covery+ ahead of the second installment, airing this Sun- day, March 6. Just be sure to allow for two hours, because everything about this year's tournament is outsized, in- cluding its premiere. Double the chefs, double the battles — that's what host Guy Fieri promised us with "Tour- nament of Champions III," and that's what he and Food Network have delivered: Eight two-hour episodes (instead of four one-hour ones), an un- precedented grand prize of $100,000 and an initial field of 32 contestants instead of 16 (though, without spoiling any- thing, four of those chefs were sent home in the premiere). "I'm always telling people to 'Go big or go home,' but for 'Tournament of Champions III' that just wasn't enough," Fieri explained in a statement. "I wanted to go even bigger, so we've upped the ante this year with even more talented chefs, more intense competition and the biggest prize in the tourna- ment's history." If you think "upping the ante" is code for "boosting de- clining ratings," think again: last year's "Tournament of Champions" was Food Net- work's biggest ratings success. "Last year, [the] 'Tourna- ment of Champions II' finale brought 11 million viewers to the edge of their seats, making it Food Network's highest-rat- ed series of 2021," Courtney White, president of Food Net- work and streaming food con- tent, said. "This new season goes even bigger. Guy brought the most spectacular culinary skill in the world to this stadi- um, and the dishes these chefs create are the most spectacu- lar on all of television." Expect more bracket-busting upsets, randomizer-induced chaos and 1-on-1 sudden-death battles in the March 6 episode, and while the episode airs, viewers can head to @FoodNet- work on Twitter to vote in the battles and use custom hashtags to support their favorite chef(s). When Round 1 ends on March 20, fans will have until March 27 to build their own "TOC" brackets and pick who they think will win the grand prize in the finale of "Tourna- ment of Champions III," airing Sunday, Apr. 17.
