February 20 - 26, 2022 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Vikings: Valhalla" - Season 1 Settle in for a wild ride when the historical drama "Vikings: Val- halla" premieres Friday, Feb. 25, on Netflix. A spinoff of the hit Netflix series "Vikings," "Valhal- la" takes place more than 1,000 years ago, set a century after the events of the original series. Fol- lowing the adventures of the famed explorer Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett, "Chilling Adven- tures of Sabrina"), his sister Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gus- tavsson, "The Witcher") and Nordic Prince Harald Sigurds- son (Leo Suter, "Sanditon") as they embark on an epic and bloody journey, tensions be- tween the Vikings as the English race towards a violent peak. As "a new generation of legendary heroes arises to forge its own destiny," the Vikings take on ev- erything in their path to glory (per Netflix). Created by Jeb Stuart ("Die Hard," 1988), the se- ries is co-written by Vanessa Al- exander ("The Great"), Declan Croghan ("The Body Farm") and Eoin McNamee ("The Gift," 2014). Steve Saint Leger returns from the original "Vikings" se- ries to direct once again, along- side Hannah Quinn ("The Stranger") and Niels Arden Oplev ("The Eagle"). Pollyanna McIntosh ("The Walking Dead"), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhan- nesson ("Alpha," 2018), David Oakes ("Victoria"), Laura Berlin ("Einstein"), Caroline Hender- son ("Always Yours," 2007), Bradley Freegard ("Keeping Faith"), Julian Seager ("Doc Martin") and Asbjørn Krogh Nissen ("Valhalla: The Legend of Thor," 2019) also star in the series. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "How It Ends" (2021) Don't miss the party to end all parties when "How It Ends" lands on Hulu on Friday, Feb. 25. Managing to combine feel-good comedy with an impending apocalypse, this film follows free-spirited Liza (Zoe Lister- Jones, "Life in Pieces") as she scores an invite to one last wild party before the world ends. As she ties up loose ends with her friends and family and tries to find her way to the party after her car is stolen, Liza sets out on a wild and hilarious journey across Los Angeles. Accompa- nied by her younger self (Cailee Spaeny, "On the Basis of Sex," 2018), Liza meets interesting characters from all walks of life on her mission to have some fun before the apocalypse. Pro- duced, directed and written by Lister-Jones and Daryl Wein ("Breaking Upwards," 2009), "How It Ends" also stars Whit- ney Cummings ("Whitney"), Tawny Newsome ("Space Force"), Finn Wolfhard ("Strang- er Things"), Nick Kroll ("Big Mouth"), Logan Marshall-Green ("Big Sky"), Bobby Lee ("Mag- num P.I."), Fred Armisen ("Port- landia"), Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day (both of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"), Bradley Whitford ("The West Wing") and Olivia Wilde ("TRON: Lega- cy," 2010). WHAT'S NEW ON SHUDDER "Hellbender" (2021) Uncover one family's dark past when "Hellbender" premieres on Shudder on Thursday, Feb. 24. Directed and written by the talented family trio of John Ad- ams, Toby Poser and Zelda Ad- ams, who've created the films "Halfway to Zen" (2016), "Knuckle Jack" (2014), "Rum- blestrips" (2013) and more, "Hellbender" has become a quick horror favorite since its premiere at the Fantasia Interna- tional Film Festival in 2021. Zel- da Adams stars as Izzy, a 16-year- old girl who has spent her whole life isolated in the mountaintop town of Hellbender with her mother (Poser). Told that she has a mysterious illness and must stay away from other peo- ple, Izzy rebels and befriends Amber (Lulu Adams, "Rum- blestrips," 2013), another local girl. When a juvenile dare to eat a worm awakens an uncontrolla- ble hunger inside Izzy, she un- covers a dark secret and her family's powerful ties to witch- craft. Acting in the film along- side the Adams family are new talents Rinzin Thonden and Khenzom, Shawn Wilson ("The Deeper You Dig," 2019) and Judy Rosen ("The Hatred," 2018). WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Free Guy" (2021) Take control of your life with the 2021 action-comedy hit "Free Guy," available to stream on Dis- ney+ on Wednesday, Feb. 23. Guy (Ryan Reynolds, "Deadpool," 2016) lives a perfectly ordinary life working as a bank teller in Free City, with his best friend, Buddy (Lil Rel Howery, "Get Out," 2017), working alongside him. Unaware that he is actually a background non-player char- acter (NPC) inside a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), a glitch and a chance encounter have Guy de- viating from his programming. Going rogue and accessing the ability to see the game as players do, Guy embarks on an adven- ture to become the hero of his own story in a world with no limits. With a screenplay by Matt Lieberman ("The Christ- mas Chronicles," 2018) and Zak Penn ("Ready Player One," 2018), "Free Guy" is directed by Shawn Levy ("Stranger Things"). The film's cast is rounded out by Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve"), Joe Keery ("Stranger Things"), Utkarsh Ambudkar ("Ghosts"), Taika Waititi ("What We Do in the Shadows"), Channing Tatum ("21 Jump Street," 2012), Aaron W. Reed ("French Connection"), Britne Oldford ("Blindspot"), Camille Kostek ("Love, For Real," 2021), Mark Lainer ("Love, Weddings & Other Disasters," 2020) and new talent Mike Devine. WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "The Protégé" (2021) Vengeance is sweet in the 2021 action thriller "The Protégé," streaming on Prime starting Fri- day, Feb. 25. Maggi Q ("Pivot- ing") stars as Anna, the world's most skilled contract killer. Res- cued as a child by legendary as- sassin Moody (Samuel L. Jack- son, "Pulp Fiction," 1994), her deadly adopted father taught her everything she knows. So when Moody is brutally murdered, Anna goes on a ruthless quest for revenge. Entangled along her journey with fellow killer Rem- brandt (Michael Keaton, "Spot- light," 2015), her straightforward and deadly mission soon takes a complicated turn. From director Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale," 2006) and writer Rich- ard Wenk ("The Equalizer," 2014), the film also stars David Rintoul ("The Crown"), Patrick Malhide ("The World is Not Enough," 1999), Ray Fearon ("Beauty and the Beast," 2017), Ori Pfeffer ("Hacksaw Ridge," 2016), Robert Patrick ("Peace- maker"), Florin Piersic Jr. ("Kill- ing Time," 2011), Velizar Binev ("Hitman," 2007) and Tudor Chirila and George Pistereanu (both of "Vlad").
