T8 WHATS UP! January 23 - 29, 2022 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Mayday" (2021) Let go of everything you think you know about women and en- ter another world with "May- day," the recent film making its way to Hulu on Thursday, Jan. 27. After drifting off to sleep in a "normal," everyday world, Ana (Grace Van Patten, "Nine Perfect Strangers"), a hotel worker, wakes up to find herself in a completely different location amid an endless war and sur- rounded by a group of young women she doesn't know. As she begins to get her bearings in this new world, Ana learns that the women she has joined are part of a small but dangerous society that interferes with and ends the lives of others. Taking up resi- dency inside a beached subma- rine, the women use the marine craft's radio to make contact with the men in war vessels at sea and lure them to their deaths — not unlike the sirens of 19th- century lore. While at first Ana feels empowered by the forceful intensity of these women and their "mission," it isn't long be- fore the former hotel worker re- alizes she might not be cut out for her new life. Written and di- rected by Karen Cinorre ("Last Date," 2016), this haunting fanta- sy thriller also stars Mia Goth ("Suspiria," 2018), Soko ("Her," 2013), Havana Rose Liu ("The Chair"), Théodore Pellerin ("On Becoming a God in Central Flor- ida"), Juliette Lewis ("Yellow- jackets") and Zlatko Buric ("2012," 2009). WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The Beast" (2022) The new Spanish horror drama "The Beast" (also titled both "The Wasteland" and "El Pára- mo") debuts on Netflix on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The film's story follows young Diego (Asi- er Flores, "Pain and Glory," 2019) and his mentally unwell mother, Lucía (Imma Cuesta, "The Bride," 2015), as they lead se- cluded but tranquil lives in the 19th century. Living in a house in the middle of nowhere where they remain isolated from the rest of society, the pair become tormented by a terrifying crea- ture that feeds on fear. As the creature tests their relationship more with each passing day, it is up to Diego to save both himself and his mother from the evils haunting them — the creature, for one, but also his mother's own damaging ways. From di- rector David Casademunt ("Rumba Tres: De ida y Vuelta," 2016), the film is written by Casademunt, Martí Lucas ("Gran Nord") and Fran Menchón ("Trivial," 2019). Ro- berto Álamo ("May God Save Us," 2016), Alejandra Howard ("Fatima," 2020) and Victor Ben- jumea ("The Dark Village," 2019) also star. "In From the Cold" - Season 1 Netflix's brand-new, female- driven spy thriller series, "In From the Cold," premieres Fri- day, Jan. 28, on the streaming platform. In Europe on vacation with her daughter, Becca (new- comer Lydia Fleming), Ameri- can single mother Jenny Frank- lin (Margarita Levieva, "The Lincoln Lawyer," 2011) was hop- ing for a quiet trip away, but her life quickly gets turned upside down when the CIA forces Jen- ny to confront her long-buried past as a Russian spy. To make matters even more complicated, Jenny is the result of a highly classified KGB experiment granting the selected partici- pants with special abilities. When a string of mysterious murders is perpetrated by someone who seems to share the exact same shapeshifting abilities as Jenny, she is forced out of hiding to confront the vil- lain so as not to lose her family and simple new life. Written and executive produced by Adam Glass ("Supernatural"), the series is directed by Ami Ca- naan Mann ("Jackie & Ryan," 2014) and Birgitte Staermose ("Darling," 2017). Cillian O'Sullivan ("Taken Down"), Charles Brice ("Homeland"), Alyona Khmelnitskaya ("Three Happy Women"), Stasya Milo- slavskaya ("The Bull," 2019), Lola Mae Loughran ("Skins"), Amanda Bright ("Coronation Street"), José Luis García Pérez ("Buried," 2010) and Anastasia Martin ("Heirs of the Night") also star in the series. WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "The Afterparty" - Season 1 The party never stops with the new Apple TV+ comedy series "The Afterparty," premiering its first three episodes on Friday, Jan. 28 (new episodes air weekly on Fridays thereafter). Comedy meets murder mystery in this new series, as a group of former classmates attends the after-par- ty for their high school reunion. When the night ends in a shock- ing murder, everyone is a sus- pect. As the detectives on scene grill each member of the party individually, the details of the night are revealed piece by piece until the shocking (and deadly) conclusion is uncovered. Each of the series' eight episodes is told from the point of view of one of the suspects, with a unique sto- rytelling and videographic style used to suit each partygoer's identity and unique personality. From the creative mind of exec- utive producer, director and writer Christopher Miller ("The Lego Movie," 2014), the series features a hilariously talented cast including Tiffany Haddish ("Girls Trip," 2017), Zoe Chao ("Love Life"), Dave Franco ("Neighbors," 2014), Sam Rich- ardson ("Veep"), Ben Schwartz ("Parks and Recreation"), Ike Barinholtz ("Suicide Squad," 2016), Ilana Glazer ("Broad City"), Genevieve Angelson ("The Upside," 2017), Jamie Demetriou ("Stath Lets Flats"), Everly Carganilla ("Yes Day," 2021) and Tiya Sircar ("The Good Place").
