I be- lieve it was called "World on Fire." Will it ever be com- pleted? A: The second season of "World on Fire" is being com- pleted as we speak, actually. It's one of the countless shows that was delayed by the pandem- ic. While some of those shows were able to recover and get back on track (relatively) quick- ly, others, including "World on Fire," have needed more time. There's no firm date yet for when it will return, but the show's official Instagram leaked that it was planning to start shooting over the summer of 2021. The show, produced by the BBC in the U.K. and airing lat- er on PBS's "Masterpiece," is a sprawling drama that shows how the war affected ordinary lives in five different coun- tries. It counts Helen Hunt ("Mad About You") and Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones") among its ensemble cast and is likely to re- turn some time this year. (Though because it airs first on BBC and later on PBS, it proba- bly won't be right away.) The fact that it's such a big, lavish drama is part of what makes it hard to guess how long it'll take to shoot and edit. That's also the reason it's taking longer than some shows to come back from the pandemic shutdown — filming is split be- tween the U.K. and the Czech Republic, meaning it has two separate sets of restrictions to navigate. Q: I've just started watch- ing "Ted Lasso," and the credits say something about it being based on something from NBC Sports. What's that about? A: The next time you reach for your remote to skip through the ads, consider the fact that "Ted Lasso," one of the most decorat- ed and beloved sitcoms of recent years, started as a pair of com- mercials. Before the clueless coach de- buted in a show on fledgling streamer Apple TV+ (and im- mediately started cleaning up at the awards shows), he was on NBC Sports, promoting their acquisition of broadcast rights for English Premier League soccer games. That was back in 2013 (and again in 2014, when a second promo was re- leased). The joke was, and continues to be, that the English don't call it soccer, they call it football. From that simple language dif- ference, a whole character was born. (Lasso is a coach of Ameri- can football who ends up coach- ing a soccer/football team in England.) Jason Sudeikis ("Saturday Night Live"), who played Lasso in the promos and plays him on the show, is the co-writer of both. He said that, in the course of writing the commercials, he realized that the man had more to say than just, 'Watch NBC Sports.' "After doing the second video, it really unlocked elements of the character that we found very, very fun to write and portray and view the world through," Sudeikis told Sports Illustrated in 2020. At that point, he sat down with his writing partners Joe Kelly and Brendan Hunt (who also plays Coach Beard on the show) to "bang out a pilot" and outline a first season. "And that let us know, 'OK, there's something here.'" Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town. Per- sonal replies will not be provided.
