WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM JANUARY 12, 2022 - JANUARY 18, 2022 UCW 19 WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Thank You, I Think? According to the Associated Press, Suyin Ting, collections manager for vertebrate paleontology at the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science, is retiring, so researchers in Alabama and South Carolina honored her with a unique gift: They named a prehistoric shark species after her. Carcharhinus tingae lived 40 million years ago and was identified using fossilized teeth in the museum's collection. "I am very honored to be recognized by my peers for my work," said Ting on her retirement day. The Continuing Crisis On Dec. 26, as bad weather kept Kristin Livdahl and her 10-year-old daughter inside, they looked for some fun challenges to do: "... laying down and rolling over holding a shoe on your foot," for example, Livdahl explained on Twitter. But when the child asked Amazon's Alexa for a challenge, Fox News reported, it suggested she plug a charger cord about halfway into a wall, then hold a penny against the exposed prongs. Fortunately, Livdahl was there with her and yelled, "'No, Alexa, no!' like it was a dog," she said. Later, Livdahl received an email from Amazon, apologizing for the incident and promising to follow up. Short Fuse Alvis Parrish, 54, of Jacksonville, Florida, got tired of hearing her boyfriend, William Carter, talk in early December, so she gave him "just enough" poison in his lemonade to shut him up. Then she called police "so he wouldn't die," clickorlando.com reported. When officers arrived, Parrish was on her front porch, where she was handcuffed. "Do whatever you want," she told them. "If you don't take me, I will kill him." A deputy who spoke to Carter, 61, said he was difficult to interview because he was so tired. Carter said the lemonade tasted funny, then collapsed on the floor. Parrish is facing a charge of poisoning food or water with intent to kill or injure a person. Question: While I was happy to see "CSI" return, a lot of that had to do with the callbacks to the original series and cast, most notably the es- sential ingredient of William Petersen as Gil Grissom and his interplay with Jorja Fox as Sara. But now it's being reported that when the show returns later this year, it will be without Gil (and Sara is only a maybe), so what's the point? e original "CSI" went downhill pretty fast after he left. — Carrie T. Matt Roush: True, this takes some of the juice out of the renewal, but the original "CSI" managed to carry on for another six seasons after Pe- tersen left during the ninth — with occasional guest appearances, which could be an option here as well, I suppose. We recently quoted the "CSI: Vegas" show runner Jason Tracey insisting, "ere's always a seat at the table for Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle," while pointing out that this comeback season was always intended as a close-ended story, and Petersen had only committed to appearing in these episodes. Much like Harmon's Gibbs on "NCIS," Gil's and Petersen's influence will likely continue to be felt even with his absence, but any time he appears it makes "CSI" a better, quirkier and more memorable show. at said, I enjoyed this season-long story arc and am encouraged to hear that the show won't entirely return to a case- of-the- week format upon its return. By Damian Holbrook Cheers to Apple TV+ for not drop- ping the ball on "Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne." e first new Peanuts holiday special in a decade did right by Charlie Brown and his squad with plenty of heart and hu- mor on tap for Lucy's big New Year's Eve bash. Jeers to e Golden Globes for shading network TV. Aside from "black-ish's" deserving stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, no other broadcast shows earned nods in the embattled awards show's ma- jor categories.
