WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM 2022 MLK DREAM JAM TOURNAMENT PROGRAM UCW 3 Happy New Year, and welcome to the 2nd Annual MLK Dream Jam. We cannot think of a better way to celebrate the new year and this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday than watching, supporting, and showcasing the talented young high school Athletics we have in Cumberland County's Public and Private schools. This event was created in January 2020 to showcase ALL of the area's basketball programs and tomorrow's upcoming talented players and superstars. In addition, the objective of this annual event is to invite college and university basketball coaches to the Fayetteville community to observe all of our local high school talents in one day. To this end, we have extended invitations to all the local area high schools to send their best teams and most talented players to compete in a friendly but competitive Public School vs. Private School Showdown. The prize? Bragging rights for the entire year! Our inaugural event hosted only 12 girls and boys teams, with the Private Schools taking the inaugural title 4 to 2. However, because of the tournament's success this year, we are incredibly proud to announce that we have 26 teams competing in this year's MLK tournament. To accommodate this enthusiastic turnout, we extended the tournament one day with the 12 girls' teams playing Saturday and the 14 boys' teams playing on Monday the 17th. Two full days of great high school basketball. A special thanks to our title sponsor Up & Coming Weekly community newspaper and Principal Tom Hatch for allowing Terry Sanford to host this great event. Also, a special thank you to our local supporting sponsors: Fayetteville Technical Community College, and Piedmont Natural Gas, and our Home Town Utility PWC. We are grateful for their ongoing community support and sponsorship of this program. So, again, thank you for being here, and have fun! The gym will be packed, and the atmosphere will be incredible, as will the basketball games. We will look forward to seeing everyone there! Karl Molnar Event Host Terry Sanford H.S. Basketball Coach Welcome to the 2nd annual MLK Dream Jam Basketball Tournament. Up & Coming Weekly is exceptionally proud to be sponsoring this event on such a special occasion as the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. This unique sporting event honors and celebrates the legacy of this renowned civil rights leader. King advocated harmony and the coming together of all peoples regardless of nationality or religion to peacefully celebrate humanity based on kindness, peace, tolerance, character, and not their racial backgrounds. This is what the MLK Dream Jam is all about. As you will witness, this sporting event celebrates those principles and the teachers, coaches, and young people who are America's future. Thank you for being here. We also want to congratulate Coach Karl Molnar for his insights and hard work in creating this basketball tournament that brings children, teachers, coaches, and families together from all over Cumberland County. In addition, we want to extend our gratitude to the following sponsors: Fayetteville Technical Community College, Piedmont Natural Gas, and PWC, Fayetteville's Home Town Utility for their support of this all-inclusive event and their ongoing contributions to the quality of life in our community. So, on behalf of these sponsors and everyone here at Up & Coming Weekly community newspaper have fun, and enjoy watching the best high school athletes in Fayetteville, Ft. Bragg, and Cumberland County. Welcome to the 2 nd Annual 2022 MLK DREAM JAM
