When Yayoi Kusama's "Infinity Mirrored Room" was added to the permanent collection in 2019, the piece's abstraction and repetition informed the intentions of the rest of the gallery. What follows is a section concentrated around figuration, but figuration from artists influenced by abstraction, shared Alejo Benedetti, associate curator, contemporary art. And the redesigned portion of the gallery is also filled with additional thrilling acquisitions that further the museum's mission of diversifying its presentation of American art and the American experience. The convergence of art, architecture and nature was always at the heart of the museum's identity. Art spills out onto the grounds — found hidden away along the trails, rising out of the flora and inviting guests to form new artistic, historical and individualized connections under the open sky. Here are just a few of the remarkable acquisi- tions made in the first decade: • Jordan Casteel, "Ourlando"; Loie Hollowell, "Mother's Milk" (featured in 2018 exhibition "The Beyond: Georgia O'Keeffe and Contemporary Art"); Nathaniel Mary Quinn, "Dave Forsythe"; Emma Amos, "The Reader" (featured in 2018's "Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power"). • Anne Lemanski's "Tigris T-I" (featured in 2021's "Crafting America") • Titus Kaphar's "The Cost of Removal" and Fritz Scholder's "Indian Land #4," on view in the 1940s to Now gallery • "Fiori Boat" (pictured) by world-renowned glass blower Dale Chihuly was part of the "Chihuly: In the Forest" outdoor exhibition in 2017. The sculp- ture earned the most votes in a community-sourced poll of which piece from the exhibition the museum should purchase. • Cuban American artist María Magdalena Campos- Pons' work, "When I am Not Here/Estoy Allá," explores the distance between the artist's home in the United States and her homeland of Cuba. • Martine Gutierrez's "Queer Rage, Imagine Life-Size, and I'm Tyra, p66-67 from Indigenous Woman" looks at Indigenous cultural appropriation by main- stream brands and is featured in the new temporary exhibi- tion "Crystal Bridges at 10," on display through Sept. 27.
