Fall 2021 Preserving the Greek experience for future generations of student leaders the Fraternity and Sorority P O L I T I C A L A C T I O N C O M M I T T E E F irst, thank you to all our donors to the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC). Your support and continued belief in the importance of the Greek system is what allows us to push forward. Students in our organizations have been faced with numerous unforeseen circumstances over the past three academic semesters—and certainly have been singled out in ways not experienced by other organizations. That's why your FSPAC board remains fully dedicated in fighting to preserve and enhance the Greek experience. While we have legislation pending that strengthens anti-hazing laws and have introduced legislation that protects our single-sex status, we are also working on freedom of association legislation that protects the rights of students who join our organizations. Our key focus since early spring, however, has been the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA). This bill will allow contributions to local housing corporations to be tax- deductible. As I write this, we are actively and diligently working to see that this bill is included in the infrastructure legislation that is anticipated to pass Congress before 2021 ends. Getting CHIA enacted into law will open the doors for numerous housing projects to begin—from new construction to renovations—on many campuses across the nation. It will provide safer and healthier living conditions for our students and eliminate the hassle of having to find alternative ways to encourage support from alumni. We are the second-largest provider of not-for-profit student housing behind the universities themselves, and it is time that our support to provide adequate and safe housing be viewed through the same lens as a contribution to our alma maters. How can you help? Contact your congressman or senator and encourage them to support CHIA (H.R. 2421/S. 2653). ALSO, continue to financially support the FSPAC. Your contributions help us meet, and develop relationships with, members of Congress who are interested in our issues. These one-on- one meetings and conversations educate Congressional leaders about the issues facing Greek students and the battles being waged against us on campuses throughout the country. Finally, after two years of meeting by Zoom and conference calls, your FSPAC board was able to meet in person on October 12-13. In conjunction with our board meeting, we hosted an in-person reception at the Cherokee Town Club in Atlanta. For those of you in attendance, it was good to see you, and I hope you were inspired as you listened to the update regarding the work of the FSPAC—specifically, the support we enjoy from Congresswoman Lucy McBath (D-GA/Delta Sigma Theta) and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr (R-GA/Theta Chi), who joined us that evening. We were excited to be together again and look forward to continuing our work on behalf of the fraternal experience. I am honored to serve as the FSPAC president this year and am proud of the work we are doing. I encourage you to get involved in our political process in any way you are comfortable. We need more people elected to Congress who understand and will engage with us regarding our issues. I look forward to the rest of a great school year that is hopefully bringing back some needed normalcy in our students' lives. Fraternally, Ben W.
