CHIA has twice passed the House of Representatives, including as recently as 2018. CHIA was reintroduced earlier this summer in both chambers of Congress and is continuing to gain sponsors. Finally, the NIC/NPC have been working with the Anti-Hazing Coalition, a group of parents who lost their sons to collegiate hazing. This collaboration is designed to (1) pass tough new laws at the state level raising the penalties for students who haze other students and (2) pass federal legislation that shines a light on student organizations that haze so informed students and parents can steer clear of organizations that pose a threat to student safety. The NIC/NPC has helped develop, introduce, and support two bills: the END ALL Hazing Act (H.R. 1933/S. 775) and the REACH Act (H.R. 2525/S. 744). As with CFAA above, both of those bills were included in the 2019 House Education Committee higher education reauthorization package that passed the committee but failed to get a vote in the full House. Both anti-hazing bills have been reintroduced in 2021 and the NIC/NPC is working with the parents of the Anti-Hazing Coalition to add more sponsors to both bills.
