WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM SEPTEMBER 8-14, 2021 UCW 19 WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Creme de la Weird It's back-to-school time and in Kentucky, one district has an unexpected challenge in one of its high schools. WLKY-TV reported that students in the Meade County school district are attending school dressed as and acting like ... cats. One grandmother is upset because her two grandchildren don't want to go to school anymore. "Apparently, from what I understand, they're called 'furries,'" she said. "They identify with animals. These people will hiss at you or scratch at you if they don't like something you're doing. The students are told they can't wear hats or Budweiser shirts in school, but they can wear cat ears, cat tails, masks, leashes. It doesn't make sense." Superintendent Mark Martin says the problem is being handled on an individual basis, which he can't discuss. Awesome! The Vatican in Rome is full of the spoils taken by or given to popes over the centuries, but Pope Francis has a new toy that's delighting him: a foosball table. The Associated Press reported that a Tuscany- based table football association, Sport Toscana Calcio Balilla, presented the pope with the game and he immediately struck up a match with Natale Tonini, president of the club. Pope Francis is a big fan of soccer and of his home club, San Lorenzo, in Argentina. Fine Points of the Law Paul Flores, 44, of San Pedro, California, is facing the court for the 1996 disappearance and murder of Kristin Smart, Yahoo News reported. Bob Sanger, Flores' attorney, filed a motion requesting a hearing to recuse the entire district attorney's of- fice. Sanger argued that prosecu- tors have a conflict of interest because they've been wearing purple clothing during the hear- ing, which was Smart's favorite color. He also said the victim witness coordinator has been sending a "prejudicial message" to witnesses that the DA's office is on Smart's side. Specifically, Sanger said, Detective Clint Cole had worn a purple tie every day of the hearing. Question: Really, PBS is canceling "Arthur?" I guess it is true, then, the world is ending and they have lost their minds. — Wendy W. Matt Roush: It sure seems that way, doesn't it? If I truly believed "Arthur" was disappearing from public TV, I'd be more upset. But with 25 years of episodes, numbering over 240, new genera- tions will be able to watch this wonderful children's series as if it were new. And when this news was confirmed, the show's execu- tive producer noted that they'll continue to develop new Arthur content for PBS Kids and other platforms, so all is not lost. But yes, to hear the word "canceled" in association with a show like "Arthur" would be like learning they're turning the lights off on "Sesame Street." In the premiere of Starz's small-town wrestling drama, Arrow alum Stephen Amell impressively went from superhero to savage when his baddie wrestler Jack Spade intentionally injured his younger brother Ace (Alexander Ludwig) in the ring. We did not see that coming, nor can we see Jack com- ing back from that move. Cheers to "Walker" for letting Jared Padalecki run the emotional gamut. e Season 1 finale on e CW saw the star break our hearts, as Cordi finally learned how his wife died, and then kick some ass after catching her killer. Heroism has never been hotter. Jeers to HBO Max for royally dis- engaging from "e Prince." Not that it's a crowning achievement in animation, but for the streamer to burn off all 12 episodes of the Buckingham Palace- bashing adult cartoon with almost zero fanfare seems a bit off.
