The title change indicates an increase in duration of anticipated service. Dr. Mayle’s new contract is through the end of the next fi scal year, June 30, 2011. The board also announced their in- tent to resume the presidential search in the spring of 2011. The fi rst search, which began in April of this year, did not result in the District Governing Board naming a seated president. Dr. Mayle began serving as Interim President in late May of this year, when then-President Dr. Marc Nigliazzo left AWC after approximately one year to become the inaugural President of a new campus for Texas A & M - Central Texas in Killeen. Dr. Mayle is a former AWC employee who served the district for 13 years in three positions. Originally serving as an instructor (1971-1975), Dr. Mayle also served as the Assistant Dean of Instruction (1975-1977) and fi nally as Dean of Instruction (1977-1984). After leaving AWC, Mayle continued his ca- reer as a community college president for 25 years, including Treasure Valley Community College, in Ontario, Or- egon; Gavilan College, Gilroy, Califor- nia; and Northeastern A&M in Miami, Oklahoma. He retired to Prescott Val- ley in 2009. KEEP INFORMED! Get updated news from the Desert Messenger online at www.QuartzsiteBlog.com Veterans Post by Freddy Groves VA Inspector General Nails Phonies, Crooks Twice a year the Veterans Admin- istration Offi ce of the Inspector Gen- eral issues a report describing what it’s been up to. The recently released report to Congress details the 120 au- dits, inspections, investigations and evaluations of the VA during the pe- riod from October 2009 to the end of March 2010. During the past six months, the VAOIG has made 269 felony arrests, gotten 150 indictments and issued 232 administrative sanctions. It identifi ed $276 million in invalid orders for unneeded goods and servic- es that had not been delivered, orders that were left to linger in limbo. It issued fi nes and penalties and got restitution to the tune of $45 million. General savings and cost avoidance came in at $283 million. Crime took a big hit this time. The VAOIG closed 424 investigations and nailed 269 people for a whole laundry list of crimes, including drug theft, embezzlement, fraud, bribery, com- puter crimes, identity theft and prop- erty crimes. Admin sanctions is another success- ful area: One fi duciary alone (tasked with taking care of veterans’ fi nances) was sent away for 55 months after stealing $1 million from 33 disabled veterans. The VAOIG did 22 inspections of the VA medical centers and looked at ster- ilizing medical equipment, credential- ing procedures, theft and more. The phonies got it this time, too. A long list of people claiming to be veter- ans were caught, ordered to pay restitu- tion in many cases, and tossed in jail. We get a lot for our money out of the VAOIG -- a return of $14 for every dol- lar spent on its investigations. Total net to the good: $673 million. If you want to read all the individual reports the VAOIG has issued dur- ing the past six months, go to: www4. va.gov/oig and click on Reports.
