By Joanne Winer The annual 4th of July celebration in Quartzsite was held at the Town Park this past Sunday. Hundreds of people came out to enjoy a fun evening of great food and activities before the wonderful fi reworks display at dark. The event was organized this year by the Quartzsite Business Chamber of Com- merce. Many local organizations participated with fundraising booths. There was lots of delicious food, including pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs pro- vided by the VFW Post 769. The First Assembly of God Church made hamburg- ers and sausage on a bun with chips and drinks. Operation Hero Comfort had sodas and water for sale. Richard Oldham brought free wa- termelon for everyone again this year. The Parks and Recreation Department pro- vided several infl ated slip and slides for the kids to enjoy. The Quartzsite Clowns were there to do face painting and balloons for everyone. Free glow bracelets were also given out courtesy of several of Floyd and Patricia Anderson. Fire Chief Kevin Hess put together a wonderful slide show highlighting the work of the fi refi ghters and their training just as it started to get dark. This show was followed by a spectacular fi reworks display sponsored by the Town of Quartzsite and put on by the Quartzsite Fire Dept. personnel. It was a fun evening of good family fun, thanks to everyone who participated and who came out to share this great time of our nation’s birthday! Bottled water arriving at Isaiah 58 The Church of Isaiah 58 Project of Arizona will be receiving 24-28 pallets of bottled water this week for local residents and travelers. There are about 100+ cases per pallet. Feed the Children provides the water, Isaiah 58 pays for the fuel for the truck. To help those in need during the hot desert summers, Rev. Mike and Linda Hobby provide this service for the community as well as those passing through. During the winter season, they provide delicious meals to the hungry. “God has shown me that He wants to bless his people, by working through them and giving them opportunity to give, so they can be blessed.” said Pastor Mike. The Town of Quartzsite put on a great dis- play of fi reworks. Kids played in the water slides, along with a few adults. Great food and good friends were found everywhere at the town park and it wasn’t even that hot!! However, I am missing my ceremonial fam- ily up north, leaving a small piece of sadness in my heart. I was recently suprised to see a photo of my elder on a friend’s Facebook page, reminding me we are connected even if apart from each other. The people of Quartzsite love this com- munity in a way that binds them together through the heat of the summer. We have had heat related deaths already this year, so please keep an eye out for your neighbors. On page 15 there are reminders about heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Please be mindful of your body during these hot days. Take care of yourself, and watch out for others. Many of you know my experience is in the advertising side of the newspaper world. Since taking over this paper, I’ve learned alot. I worked at the newspaper in Ashland, Or- egon, where the building is actually divided by a short wall, seperating the advertising side from the editorial side. It was a great visual of how we all had to work together, but not infl uencing the other. Everyone has personal opinions. In the heat of the summer, may we learn to not “take heat” from each other and “keep our cool”! May we be reminded that as human beings, we are all related.
