SEPTEMBER 20-26, 2020 COVER STORY Ansel Adams' presence always exists and informs the work of other artists when thinking about the National Parks and, particularly, photographing their natural splendor, Benedetti poses. Sometimes, he shares, that influence manifests as a very direct response to Adams. Other times, it's a critique or a departure from the work Adams was doing. But all of these styles are present in the new exhibition that sets his practice into perspective. Photos of burned forests by both Adams and contemporary artist Laura McPhee draw connections to the devastation currently raging on the West Coast. Images of the National Parks from the perspective of a Vietnamese immigrant prompt questions of belonging. Depictions from the Manzanar War Relocation Camp during World War II show Japanese- Americans overcoming great injustice to build a "vital community in an arid (but magnificent) environment," Adams said in a letter to the Library of Congress. "These conversations, they're not new conversations, and they continue to be very pertinent," Benedetti says. "These spaces that we often think about as 'quintessentially American,' that in itself is also a loaded way of thinking about these spaces. Because, of course, these National Parks represent so many things, but they also represent spaces in which Indigenous people were pushed off of their land. And it also is a space where folks [consider] who belongs in these National Parks?" Though its exhibition dates were moved back in response to covid-19, "Ansel Adams in Our Time" will still be on display at Crystal Bridges during the same period that artist Nick Cave's solo exhibition is presented at the museum's sister space, the Momentary. While the two exhibitions don't have an overt connection through theme, style or medium, engaging visitors across both spaces is an exciting new endeavor the curatorial team can navigate now that the Momentary is open. "The Nick Cave exhibition is very much concerned with what's happening today," Benedetti posits. "And I think that folks, when they come to the Ansel Adams exhibition, will see it's also tremendously focused on the present day, even as we're looking to this figure from the past. So I think that is something that very much links that overall program is that, even when we look to the past, there's still this relevance and pertinence to the present moment."
