My family and I did everything we could to make her day spe- cial. In addition to our efforts, others called, sent flowers, and sent cards. My mother was overwhelmed and ex- tremely happy about all the hoopla, kindness, and love that was shown to her. Taking it all in she exclaimed, "It's good to be remembered!" Just a few short months ago she had been living out of town by herself as a widow, and because of the distance and health issues, she didn't have the interaction with her family and loved ones. At times while alone, she felt that she was forgotten or unimportant. Just like my mother, many people around us feel lonely, stressed, or devas- tated by a problem or tragedy. No, we can't do or fix ev- erything - but we can do something. Reaching out with love to comfort, strengthen, and serve others not only pleases the Lord, but he says that you are serv- ing him personally by doing so. In Matthew 25:34- 40 Jesus states: "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the king- dom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me some- thing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' Some simple ways to show acts of kindness: • Check on elderly neighbors. • Give caretakers of sick loved ones a break. • Visit, send flowers, or send cards to someone in the hospital. • Donate new or gently used clothes to a homeless shelter. • Bring or send a meal or gro- ceries to someone. • Mentor a child or teenager. • Pay for the meal of a stranger at a restaurant or drive-thru. • Invite a new person in your office, church, or neighborhood to lunch. • Give money anonymously to someone that is having a hard time financially. PRAY THIS PRAYER: "Praise be to the God and Fa- ther of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts me in all my troubles, so that I can com- fort those in any trouble with the comfort I have received from God. Lord it's an honor and a privilege to serve you through serving oth- ers. Show me how to love those in my sphere of influence who feel insignificant, because they are im- portant to you. In Jesus name I pray. Amen." Danyale Patterson is an Evan- gelist and member of Engage Church. Contact her at www. danyale.com to share a testimony, send a prayer request, or book her to speak. DANYALE PATTERSON As Chris- tians, we are instructed to give "a reason for the hope that is in you." (1 Peter 3:15) But since Christians are also human, and this world we live in can be over- whelming at times, what should we do when we are tempted to lose sight of our hope? I believe the Word of God gives us at least four things we can do to regain our focus and keep our hearts anchored in Christ. The first thing we have to do is to purpose in our hearts that we will hope in the Lord. The Psalm- ist spoke to his own heart when he asked, "Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you dis- quieted within me?" He then be- gins to remind himself where his focus ought to be. "Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God." (Psalm 43:5) It's an act of the will to direct our hearts to trust in the Lord. Next, we find hope in God's Word. "That we through the pa- tience and comfort of the Scrip- tures might have hope." (Romans 15:4) When the storm is raging is this troubled world, everyone who trusts in the Living God can find strength in His Word. I've found that when we neglect the Scrip- tures, our hope begins to fade. Stay in the Word and you will be strengthened. We can also be encouraged by other believers. The writer of Hebrews tells us to, "Hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful." He says "Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together... but exhorting one another." (He- brews 10:23-25 ) In these unusual times when we are not supposed to gather in large groups, the comfort of a phone call, a text, or an email can make a tremendous difference in the life of a fellow believer. Finally, one of the greatest weapons against discouragement is to simply begin to praise the Lord. "But I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more. My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness and Your salvation all the day..." ( Psalm 71:14-15) When we begin to praise Him, we tell Him how wonderful He is and how gracious and kind He has been to us. We tell of His power and majesty, how nothing is im- possible for our God! An amazing thing begins to happen when we praise Him with all of our heart. Our heart is blessed and our trust in the Lord is strengthened!
