WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM NOVEMBER 27- DECEMBER 3, 2019 UCW 27 WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Fine points of the law After losing in district court, con- victed killer Benjamin Schreiber took an unusual claim to the Iowa Court of Appeals but was shut down again Nov. 6, according to The Washington Post. Schreiber, 66, was sentenced to a life term in 1997, but in March 2015, he suf- fered a medical emergency in his prison cell that caused doctors to have to restart his heart five times. Schreiber thus claimed he had briefly "died," and therefore he had served out his life sentence and should be released. The district judge didn't buy it, though, say- ing the filing proved he was still alive, and the appeals court agreed, saying, "Schreiber is either alive, in which case he must remain in prison, or he is dead, in which case this appeal is moot." Higher education A Dutch university now offers students a turn in the "purification grave," a hole dug in the ground where students can lie down and reflect on their lives for up to three hours. The student chaplaincy at Radboud University initially offered the experience in 2009 as a tem- porary experiment, but due to in- creased demand, it's back this year, according to Vice. Students are not allowed to bring their phones or a book with them into the grave. "You can see it as a special place of medi- tation: below you the earth, above you the sky," the university website explains. "You will then automati- cally notice what is going through your mind." If you're skittish about entering the grave, you can sit on the bench nearby. Radboud also offers a finals-season "crying room" and nap pods. Awesome! For the person on your gift list this year who can't get enough ranch dressing, Hidden Valley comes to the rescue with a deco- rative plastic stocking full of its creamy nectar. FanSided reports the Hidden Valley Ranch Custom Holiday Stocking measures 105 square inches festooned in red and green and filled with 52 ounces of Original Ranch. It comes with its own mantle holder and has a handy pouring spout at the toe. All that ranchy fun costs just $35. Time to get dippin'! Question: I'm glad "Homeland" is finally returning. But is 22 months between seasons a record? —Oliver Matt Roush: is could be the lon- gest hiatus for a continuing series. "Game of rones" comes close, with a long lapse between the pen- ultimate season, which ended Aug. 2017, and final season, which pre- miered April, 2019. "Homeland's" is even longer, having wrapped its sixth season on April, 2018 and not scheduled to return until Feb., 2020. is is an insanely long wait for "Homeland's" final chapter. Although "Better Call Saul" is get- ting up there. It wrapped its fourth season in October 2018 and still hasn't announced a start date for Season 5. At this point, I will need a refresher when these shows return. To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider.com. By Damian Holbrook Cheers to Seth Meyers for delivering a stand-up set worthy of a standing O. For his Netflix special, "Lobby Baby," the "Late Night" host offers a closer look at the crazy birth stories of his two sons that celebrates his wife and shows how great comedy can be in the hands of good guys. Cheers to Timothy Simons for go- ing from goofy to gut-wrenching. Best known as Veep's much-mocked White House staffer turned politico Jonah Ryan, the actor has us looking at him in a whole new light, thanks to his poignant turn as a boarding- school headmaster trying to help a class of kids navigate a tragic event in Hulu's beautiful "Looking for Alaska." Jeers to a "Clueless" idea for a re- boot CBS Television Studios is eyeing a dark update of the frothy 1995 com- edy that would see a modern-day Dionne (Stacey Dash in the movie) looking into the disappearance of her bestie, Cher (Alicia Silverstone).
