The Wreckage PAGE 2 Chapter House Receives Outdoor Space Upgrade A cacia brothers from the 1990s and 2000s will very well remember the deck out back and its usefulness for so many important collegiate gatherings. Alas, the deck is gone. Its replacement: a concrete patio clad in Indiana limestone that looks as though it was attached to the dining room from the very beginning in 1958. "We wanted an outdoor space that would measure up to the quality design and construction of the Chapter house itself," said Justin Fox '95 (#1713), house director, bike team coach, and Chapter Advisor. "It's going to transform the back of the house." Justin was inspired when the active brothers started talking about smaller renovations to the deck in 2018. A tour of some of the newer chapter houses on campus during break in December of 2018 revealed just how much attention fraternities and sororities have given to their outdoor spaces. "It's part of the evolution of Greek houses on campus," Justin continued. "Many of them have great patios and courtyards. The upscale apartments in Bloomington, with their own outdoor entertainment spaces, influence some of this, too." A contribution to the project by brothers managing the Kyle P. Simcoe Memorial Fund, Dustin Detzler '04 (#2105), Neil McDonald '05 (#2149), Jerry Gordon '05 (#2157), and a $5,000 contribution by the active members, sealed the deal. "This is so awesome for us and for the Chapter overall," said Joe McCormick '18, Chapter Executive Dean and one of the active champions pushing for the project. "It makes the back of the house complete. Plus, we really appreciate the way the building corporation and Chapter Advisors stepped up to support this. It's a project by Acacians across the generations." When the project is complete, a dedication ceremony naming the space for the late Kyle Simcoe '05 (#2152) will be held. The new space replaces both the old deck and the even older, smaller patio. The result will be a large outdoor space that evolves naturally out of the dining room. Indiana limestone cladding shapes the exterior and interior of the new outdoor space. A custom-milled cap will top-off the walls. W hen you pay your $65 alumni dues each year, you help support academic programming and services for Indiana Chapter of Acacia Fraternity. Alumni dues are solicited by the Acacia Fraternity Foundation (AFF) and are deposited in the Indiana Chapter Fund at AFF. All contributions to that fund are tax deductible. AFF is a tax-deductible, educational nonprofit; the Indiana Acacia Building Corporation is not. Some of you may remember that the Indiana Acacia Alumni Association once did all this work. However, several years ago, Craig Fulmer '61 (#773) and the association gave this task over to AFF, which has the resources and continuity to manage the fund and the dues billings. The Indiana Chapter Fund now supports scholarships, academic awards (for 3.45 GPA scholars), tutoring reimbursements, and an annual scholarship dinner. Occasionally, those funds have been used for upgrades to the Richard D. Ford Library on the second floor above the dining room, a space that is heavily used. AFF has other scholarship funds also benefitting undergraduates of Indiana Acacia. These are: • David J. Allen Memorial Fund • Emma C. Allen Memorial Fund • Arthur D. Lautzenheiser Memorial Fund • Kyle P. Simcoe Memorial Fund Combined, we provided $21,250 in scholarships to Acacia brothers this 2019-2020 academic year. Look for an upcoming mailed letter regarding this year's alumni dues or go to the donate page for the Foundation any time: https://www.acacia.org/donate. We know you get solicited for contributions all the time, but a small annual $65 payment for alumni dues to the Indiana Chapter Fund does great things.
