In the Medicine Cards, the snake represents change, transformation, and shedding our skin for something new. Like the caterpillar in the cocoon, breaking free to fly. We have spent over hundred years proving how thought influences the body, water and our world. Strange as it may seem, change has been a slow process. Many times when there was a perfect golden opportunity to increase the awareness of change, we panic. We panic because we are uncertain, or afraid. Fear manifests in so many ways. There is fear of the unknown, fear of change, fear of loss, fear of being found out, fear of success, fear of failure, fear of the past, fear of the future, fear of not being good enough, fear of sickness, fear of survival, fear of environment, and fear of trusting. Just like when company comes over and you quickly do some house cleaning, there might be a place you throw all the stuff you don't know what to do with. Then, when you have time to go though it, you have to make the choice to simply let go of some items. Or, you end up keeping everything. Old baggage can be very annoying those things which no longer serve you, but there is a gut feeling that they may someday. If you are having trouble moving forward, or getting rid of stuff that no longer serves you, then ask yourself these questions. Do you wish you lived in the past? Do you think life is moving to fast? Are you having panic attacks? Do you feel uncertain about the future? Do you finish projects? Do you find you have reoccurring thoughts that make you sad, mad, or feel bad? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you are most likely wadding through the closet of resisting change. You might feel stuck or overwhelmed, instead of living fully in the present and the future might not seem too bright. If you multiplied these kinds of feelings by 100,000 people thinking and feeling the same kind of limitations, what do you think might happen? There could be a huge resistance toward moving into the future, a fear so big, that people "dumbdown" and need to be controlled like leading sheep to water. Yet the snake beckons us to shed, let-go and become free. Embracing change is good medicine, which is why we see the snake is woven in symbols for behavioral and medical practices. I encourage you to take out a pen and drawl a snake. Color it, befriend it and even ask the snake, "What is one thing I am willing to let go of right now?" Listen… notice what your mind tells you. Then ask, "What is something that is no longer serving me?" Explore, play, and with your pen in hand, draw what you would be like if you let go and were set free of any fear. What about the world? What would it look like? Playing gives us information and profound insights to ourselves. Once a train gets rolling down the track it is pretty hard to stop it. Yet anything is possible, when there is a will there is a way. Awaking ones will. It's just a matter of desire, faith, prayer, action and sometimes hiring a coach.
