AUGUST 14-20, 2019 UCW 59 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Precocious Four Australian kids took running away from home to a new level on July 13 when they wrote a goodbye note and absconded with cash, fishing gear and an SUV belonging to one of their parents. The three boys and one girl, aged 10 to 14, left Rockhampton in Queensland, and headed south to Grafton, a trip of more than 600 miles. Along the way, they twice bought gas without paying and survived a short police chase in New South Wales, which was terminated by the highway patrol "due to age of the driver and road conditions," Acting Police Inspector Darren Williams told Fox News. Around 10:30 p.m. on July 14, police finally caught up with the kids, who locked the doors and refused to exit the car. An of- ficer broke a window with a baton to gain entry. The young thieves will be charged, but they couldn't be questioned until their parents showed up. [Fox News, 7/14/2019] The not-so-friendly skies A Delta Airlines flight from Puerto Rico to New York was forced to return to San Juan on July 3 af- ter Carlos Ramirez, 30, "became unruly," Reuters reported. "I am God!" Ramirez shouted, according to Puerto Rican police. "San Juan is going to disappear tomorrow. I came to save the world, and I am going to end terrorism." Flight at- tendants and passengers restrained the man until the plane could land, then Puerto Rico police took him into custody. The cockpit remained secure during the fracas. [Reuters, 7/3/2019] Techno-weird The New York Post reported on July 14 that more than 4,000 Swedes have willingly had microchips im- planted in their hands to replace credit cards and cash. The chips also help people monitor their health and can be programmed to allow access into buildings. Jowan Osterlund, a former body piercer who pioneered the chips, says the technology is safe. But British sci- entist Ben Libberton, based in Swe- den, said he worries that people aren't considering the potential dangers, including the unwitting dissemination of data about a person. "Do I get a letter from my insurance company saying premi- ums are going up before I know I'm ill?" he wondered. [New York Post, 7/14/2019] Question: I have read that one of my favorite shows, "e Orville," is mov- ing to Hulu for Season 3. And that it's the show-runners who have decided to move it. Are they nuts? ey will certainly lose many viewers. And that's a shame. ere are so many streaming services out there right now, and I'm certainly not buying into another one. is move could very possibly kill the show when Hulu sees how many viewers don't jump to their service to watch it. What were they thinking? —JC Matt Roush: is surprise announce- ment triggered quite a bit of mail this week. Starting with this angle, that air- ing for two seasons on Fox obviously made "e Orville" available to more viewers than will likely be following it to Hulu — where new episodes won't premiere until late 2020. But in today's very complicated marketplace, it isn't always all about ratings, and with Hulu and the Fox studio, which produces "e Orville," both now controlled by Disney, this is an example of corporate synergy that may also be meant to ap- pease the show's creator and star, Seth MacFarlane — who according to e Hollywood Reporter is currently a free agent, his overall deal with the Fox studio having expired. No explanation about production demands is likely to satisfy fans who'd prefer to see the show stay on regular network TV and for them, this is quite clearly an unfor- tunate blow. TBS's late-night host had to wing his entire July 11 episode when "Silicon Val- ley's" Kumail Nanjiani pulled out of his scheduled appearance 30 minutes before air due to filming delays on the HBO comedy. So Coco did what he does best and improvised bits and skits to fill the time. Jeers to "Veronica Mars" for bringing us down so shockingly. Without spoiling the new season for those who still haven't binged the Hulu series, let's just say that the fatal events of the season finale have killed our hopes of seeing Veronica get the happily ever after she deserves after putting up with so much mayhem.
