Our 30th Year • Issue No. 5 • January 31, 2013 Cleveland County Memorial Library Programs For February THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE… Spend your lunch hour at the library and feed your mind! The Main Library in Shelby is continuing the series of programs for our community that will give folks a chance to spend their lunch hour being entertained. The idea is to bring your bag lunch and the library will provide water, tea and a great program. The programs will be held in the Plaster Meeting Room and you can "come through the garden gate" entrance. The programs will be on the first and third Thursdays of every month from 12:15 to 12:45 and will feature stories, music and educational topics. The month of February's programs are: February 7th – The Life of Anna Julia Haywood Cooper presented by Lillian Corprew. Anna was born into enslavement in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1858. She was the fourth African-American woman to earn a doctoral degree. In 2009, the United States Postal Service released a commemorative stamp in Cooper's honor. Please join us for an interesting program during Black History Month. February 21st – Suspense and Thriller Stories with storyteller, Georgiana Wright. Also for Black History Month, we will be showing a movie on February 12th, Tuesday evening, 6:30 pm. The name of the movie is "The Tuskegee Airmen"; they fought two wars, one against the Nazis abroad, one against Racism at home. This PBS video was filmed in 2004 and is narrated by Ossie Davis. The store is conveniently located at 1661 East Dixon Boulevard in Shelby Plaza between Big Lots and Planet Fitness. There is plenty of free parking. Rescue Mission Thrift Store is a bargain hunters dream. Kids clothes are prices from 99 cents to $5.99, adult and young adults items are priced from $1.50 to $8.99. The store is 6,000 square feet of one bargain after another and is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Director, Pastor Michael Gullatte is very optimistic about what the store will offer. "The store provides opportunities for customers and also benefits the Cleveland County Rescue Mission". The key to the success is donations by citizens. Donation receipts will be provided. For larger items such as furniture there is a free pick up service. Just call 704-476-0031 to schedule a pick up. It's definitely a show for mature and adult audiences. The play, which celebrates the ups and downs of romance will be performed on February 1st through 3rd and February 8th through 10th. The Friday and Saturday performances start at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, curtain call is at 2:30 p.m. All the performances will be at the Keeter Auditorium at Cleveland Community College located on South Post Road in Shelby. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little "masked bandits" at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. A five-member selection committee chose the winners from a pool of more than 150 candidates based on their exceptional contributions to the economic development industry. DCI, a New York-based firm that specializes in economic development marketing, managed the award's program, which was designed to discover the economic development profession's rising stars. "The people chosen by the selection committee represent a bright future for the economic development Kristin world," said Andy Levine, president of DCI. "They are a new breed of resultsdriven, place makers. We're very pleased to see Kristin Fletcher among the winners." DCI officially announced the winners last night at an awards reception during the International Economic Development Council Leadership Summit in Orlando and will feature an in-depth profile of each on its website during 2013. Cleveland County Manager Eddie Bailes noted Fletcher's accomplishments in the economic development arena. "Kristin is a proactive leader who works tirelessly to expand our local and regional economies. Under her leadership, she has collaborated with local government leaders in recruiting more than 35 companies to Cleveland County over the past five years. These companies, along with existing industry expansions, have resulted MEAL DEAL 1/4 Lb. GrillBurger With Cheese, Fries, COKE and a Mini Blizzard Treat in the creation of 2,638 jobs with new investments of $4.7 billion dollars. In spite of the current economic downturn, Kristin has been a shining star by aggressively and effectively marketing our community and building key relationships with site selection consultants and project managers, which has resulted in new jobs and investment. Her efforts will help to ensure a bright future for Cleveland County." Fletcher is a native of Cleveland County and graduated in 1999 from North Carolina State University. Over the past 10 years, her career and experience has spanned politics, finance, marketing, public relations and economic development. Aside from her role with the Cleveland County Economic Development Partnership, she currently chairs the Charlotte Regional Partnership's Economic Development Advisory Fletcher Council, which is composed of economic development leadership from the 16-county Charlotte region. Fletcher has served and continues to serve on a variety of boards and associations, some of which include: The North Carolina State University Industrial Extension Services Advisory Board of Directors, Cleveland County Manufacturer's Roundtable, Cleveland County YMCA Board of Directors and United Way Board of Directors. She is actively involved in the North Carolina Economic Developer's Association, as well as the International Economic Development Council.
