32 Northwest Arkansas Basketball Sunday, November 4, 2018 NWA Democrat-Gazette/J.T. WAMPLER Grant Myrick (right) and Greg McCone are the new basketball coaches at Huntsville High School. C L A S S 4 A H UNTSVILLE — Grant Myrick and Greg McCone know the tradition of Hunts- ville basketball. They see it every day when they walk into the gymnasium. McCone is the new girls basketball coach. The previous coach? His name is affixed to the outside of Charles Berry Gymnasium. Myrick is the new boys basketball coach. The previous coach? His name is painted on Jim Stafford Court. "It's a little overwhelming if you dwell on it," Myrick said. "They both did a great job here, and I'm not going to be able to fill those shoes. I'm going to be the best Grant Myrick I can be." McCone spent more than 15 seasons sitting on the bench with Berry as his assistant coach. He absorbed as much knowledge as he could from the longtime Hall of Fame coach and will carry that forward. "You have to look at it right," McCone said. "There is no way I could fill or duplicate what he did here." Myrick spent seven seasons as the head coach at St. Paul, which is part of the Hunts- ville school system. Last season he was the girls basketball coach at George Junior High in Springdale. A graduate of Berryville, Myrick's father was a longtime assistant coach with Stafford. "Coaching here, replacing Coach Stafford is an honor," Myrick said. "My dad was an assis- tant here for 15 years. I've spent a lot of time in this office talking to Staff, my dad, Coach Berry. I'm grateful for this opportunity." Huntsville coaches have huge shoes to fill Where Eagles dare CHIP SOUZA NWA DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE See COACHES, Page 34
