North Carolina can strengthen its economy and dramatically improve opportunities for families by making public education a priority and investing in children. X X NC Pre-K currently only serves about half of the estimated 67,000 at-risk 4-year-olds across the state. Pre-k must be adequately funded in order to serve all eligible children. X X Meanwhile North Carolina legislators have continued their pursuit of costly tax cuts in recent years, greatly reducing revenue for public schools which now lack adequate resources to ensure all students receive a quality education regardless of where they live in the state. X X State funding for teacher mentoring programs and professional development has been eliminated, while budget cuts have drastically reduced much of the support students and teachers receive in and out of the classroom. X X Over the last seven years, legislators have reduced funding for teacher assistants by 35.66%, supplies and materials for classrooms by 40.53%, low-wealth schools by nearly 12%, and North Carolina's teacher compensation plan is now ranked 49th in the nation in competitiveness. X X Instead of funding our resource-starved public schools, lawmakers provided annual increases in state funding allocated to unaccountable, non-transparent private schools. Yet, no evidence exists that student achievement increases by attending a private voucher school. ASK YOUR CANDIDATES: X WILL YOU work to ensure NC rises out of the bottom in the rankings of per pupil spending and reach at least the national average in teacher pay? X WILL YOU advocate for full funding for our traditional public schools, where over 80% of our students are enrolled, rather than divert more taxpayer dollars to be used for unaccountable voucher programs? X WILL YOU advocate for the funding necessary for districts to prepare for compliance with the four-year phase-in of the K-3 class size reductions? X WILL YOU ensure all at-risk children can participate in quality early childhood programs?
