All qualified applications will be presented to the Appointments Committee in November. The Fayetteville City Council will approve boards and commissions members at a regular meeting in November. The City will accept applications via the City website at FayettevilleNC.gov. Citizens should click on Government and choose Boards and Commissions under the City Council section. Mayor Colvin Hosts Meetings with Millennials Mayor Mitch Colvin hosted two public meetings titled "Fayetteville Millennial Movement" on Oct. 17 and 18 to gather input from millennials on their thoughts, concerns and ideas on how to make Fayetteville a better city. A third upcoming meeting and information for the session is included here: • Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. – City Hall Council Chamber, 433 Hay St. "As Mayor, and father of three daughters whom I hope choose to call Fayetteville home as adults, it's important for me to understand the wants and needs of our young millennials," Mayor Mitch Colvin said. "What do they like and what don't they like about Fayetteville? What can we improve on? While we have made great strides with young professionals in our city, we can always get better, so my focus in the meeting will be finding out how we can be more appealing to the young leaders of tomorrow. I invite young people across the city to come to the meeting and share with me what they would like to see." Senior Center West Breaks Ground The much anticipated groundbreaking of the Senior Center West was held Oct. 18. The event took place in the parking area along the western edge of Lake Rim, in the vicinity of 7510 Old Raeford Road. Senior Center West is the sixth project to begin construction funded by the Parks & Recreation Bond Referendum. The Senior Center West will be a 19,000 square foot lake-front facility, including such features as a fitness room and a warm-water indoor pool. The Senior Center West will address two growing needs in the community: • Having more space and adequate facilities in Fayetteville to assist the heavily used Senior Center on Blue Street • Providing quality programming and activities to a growing senior citizen population Studies from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) have shown the need in Fayetteville, around the state and across the country for more senior citizen activities, as the statistics have proven that the more seniors remain active, the better quality of life they have and the longer they live. According to the NCOA, 73 percent of citizens age 65-74 report no regular physical activity, 81 percent age 75+ report no regular physical activity and 61 percent report an unhealthy weight. Senior centers focus on several wellness factors in efforts to improve those numbers: Emotional wellness, intellectual wellness, physical wellness, social wellness, spiritual wellness and vocational wellness. Fayetteville voters approved the $35 million bond package in a 2016 election. Splash pads at Kiwanis, Massey Hill and Myers recreation centers have already been constructed and opened since that time, and saw a large amount of visitors during a very hot summer of 2018. Other completed projects include Seabrook Park and Pool Deck upgrades and the Massey Hill Universally Accessible Playing Field. The field at Massey Hill has been utilized by Buddy Sports programs and those have seen a 15 percent increase in enrollment since the field opened.
