16 www.DesertMessenger.com October 17, 2018 By Jackie Deal If there's a heaven on earth it must be Hawaii, especially Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Bunny (Cheryl) and Jack Rab- bit (Jackie) traveled Oahu from end to end and side to side. It was made simple by a wonderful city bus system. Senior Citizens (Rabbit) paid $2 and showed their Medicare card for a day's pass. Cheryl (beach bunny that she is) had to pay $5. for the same privileges. This entitled you to an all day, get off and back on, pass. And boy! Did we use it. The only complication was that Rabbit tended to lose today's pass and proffer yesterday's pass to the obser- vant bus driver who would shake his head in disgust and say, :"You can't get by with yesterday's pass." Then ensued a mad search through a voluminous purse while half of Hawaii im- patiently waited to board behind me. I only had to pay extra once! Our maiden bus ride was to the Dole Pineapple Plantation. Yes, if you buy a can of Dole pineapple it comes from Oahu, Hawaii. The planta- tion is huge and traversed by a charming little train that we enjoyed. The narration told us more then we really wanted to know about pineapples and Dole but was fun and relaxing. There is nothing to compare to Dole smoothies made from fresh, ripe pineapple and served with or without whipped cream. We indulged. It seemed that all buses circled the Waikiki area and came back to where we started but that was only because we frequently got on going the wrong direction. Now if we could have seen the beach, not possible with all the high rises, we should have known which way was west. But trapped down beneath 30 and 40 story condos it was easy to get disoriented. Really, it didn't matter, we just got off and got on another bus: they seemed to come every 15-30 minutes. The Ala Moana Shopping center was our most frequent bus changing center and also one of the many monstrous shopping plazas. We had been advised to get free samples of cookies and candies and Bunny was expert at spotting these. With a little conniving one could almost make a meal on free samples. We found a bar/restaurant offering $2 tacos and $2 tequilas. Aha, just our price. The tacos were not even palm sized but they were exceptionally good and the tequila was as tequila always is. We sat by the musician, Johnny, and conversed while he set up his equipment. Music? Ah, must stay and have another tequila and two more tacos. Then we were told more musicians were coming: another tequila and two more tacos. Bunny and Rabbit wobbled home and will continue their adventures in the next issue of The Desert Messenger.
