October 17, 2018 www.DesertMessenger.com 15 Assessor's Corner The power of Uva ursi Veterans....need a ride to Phoenix VA? Veterans in La Paz County who need a ride to their hospital appointments at the Phoenix VA hospital can take advantage of a free service from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter in Lake Havasu. The DAV has been operating a shuttle service from Lake Havasu to Phoe- nix VA for many years. Stops are along SR 95 and include Parker Dam, Parker, Quartzsite and Vicksburg Road and I-10. To take advantage of this service, you must have an appointment at the hospital prior to calling the DAV and it must be a morning appointment. The van runs every Monday and Wednesday. Due to legal issues raised ear- lier this year, DAV can no longer take veterans to "off-site" appointments into the city of Phoenix. This is a statewide decision, not a local one. Anyone wishing to make an appointment, or has further questions, please call the DAV offi ce at 928-855-0356 between the hours of 9:30 AM and 1 PM on weekdays, or call anytime and leave a message on voicemail. by Herbmama Uva ursi or bearberry is an anti- bacterial, astringent & a diuretic. It contains a considerable amount of tannins, roughly about 40%, mak- ing it one of natures most powerful astringents available. The defi nition of an as- tringent is: a substance able to contract or con- strict cell walls & bodily tissues. This powerful herb is a specialist in infections and in- fl ammation of the urinary tract. It contains an assortment of chemi- cal compounds, especially arbu- tin...which is an active component against many of the pathogens commonly found in UTI's! Uva ursi is more effective when the urine is alkaline, so do not take it with cran- berry juice which makes the urine acidic and the 2 could counteract each other. Uva ursi should be reserved when quick intervention is needed. It should not be taken for extended periods and not for those with kid- ney disease. It has been known to reverse urinary tract infections as it increases renal circulation and stimulates tubular function. The substance arbutin is converted in the urine to hydroquinone, a uri- nary antiseptic. It literally fl ushes out the kidneys. If you use it regu- larly, you will need to replenish your potassium, which can be lost when you lose fl uid. So a dandelion tincture would be a great benefi t to that. The hydroquinone which is derived from the arbutin and methykrbutm are powerful anti-bacterial agents and are thought to be responsible for it's abil- ity to treat UTI's. It's recommended that a week's (7 days) use of Uva ursi should be more than enough time to knock out the menacing infection. After symptoms have subsided, switch to blueberries &/or cranber- ries (and not the sugary stuff)!! It traditionally was used for the treatment of bladder & kidney infec- tions and kidney stones. It was also recommended for treatment of bron- chitis. Arbutin is also known to have antimicrobial activity against E. coli.
