October 17, 2018 www.DesertMessenger.com 17 T��� ����� ������� �� D����� M�������� Gem & Mineral Club opens for season Nancy's Kitchen PUMPKIN CORN CHOWDER PUMPKIN CORN CHOWDER ½ C butter, 1 chop onion ½ C fl our, 2 C pumpkin 1 can white kernel corn 1 ½ C chicken broth 1 lb. thick, cooked and crumbled bacon, 1 quart half and half Melt butter and sauté onion. Add fl our and mix til pasty. Add corn, pumpkin and broth. Mix well, and simmer. Add bacon and mix. Pour ½ of chowder into a blender. Mix til smooth. Return to pot and stir, and simmer. When ready to serve add half and half And resume heating….don't boil! DINNER IN A PUMPKIN Medium size pumpkin; cut top off and set aside. Clean insides out and rinse…set aside. Brown 3 lbs. ground beef, in large skillet. Add: 2 tsp salt, ½ tsp black pep- per, 2/3 C chopped green pepper, 1½ C chopped celery, 1½ C chopped onion,½ C soy sauce, 4 TBS brown sugar, 2 cans (4 oz-drained) mush- rooms, 2 cans cream chicken soup 4 C cooked rice Fill Cleaned pumpkin shell, with mixture. Set on a cookie sheet. Put the "top" of the pumpkin fl at on the cookie sheet, with the pumpkin. Bake at 350 for 2-3 hours. After tak- ing out of the oven, decorate it like a jack o lantern; lettuce on top, with "pumpkin top" on top of lettuce (makes hair), carrot for nose, sliced cucumber for eyes, green pepper for ears etc. use your imagination. When dishing up the fi lling, onto a plate scrape out some of the pump- kin linning with the spoonful of rice mixture. Makes a perfect din- ner and decoration for a Halloween meal or luncheon. The Roadrunner Gem & Mineral Club will open Monday, November 5th. Our fi rst meeting will be Thurs- day, October 25th, 2pm in the An- nex. The offi ce will open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, October 29, 30, 31 from 9am-12pm for renewals. There will be a New Member Orien- tation Thursday, November 1st in the Annex (be there at 7:30 am). The Quartzsite Roadrunners Gem & Mineral club in one of the largest gem & mineral clubs in the country. In addition, our club is 100% volun- teer operated, which means many of the members help by being elected offi cers, shop foremen, instructors, leaders of fi eld trips, and cashiers at many events, etc. Membership in the club is held at a very low cost because of the efforts of our volunteers. Our an- nual membership is $20 per year. And our season is a full fi ve months (November through March) long. You must be 18 years old or older to become a member. Our facilities, classes and other ac- tivities during the season are led by members who volunteer their time on behalf of other members. The club is indeed an amazingly suc- cessful organization that provides the best in educational opportuni- ties to promote the use of lapidary and jewelry making activities for its members. We also hold many social activities throughout the year. Come and join us as a member and we en- courage you to participate as a vol- unteer to the extent that you can. If you are a new member you can buy your membership at our man- datory new membership orienta- tion, Thursday 8:00 am held in the Multipurpose Room, 65 Ironwood St. or at our club meeting, Thursday at 2:00 pm at the QIA building. Re- turning members can renew their membership at regular Thursday meetings of the club, 2 pm at the QIA building or by coming to the club offi ce trailer, 65 Ironwood St in Quartzsite, Mon, Tue, Wed or Fri from 9:00 am to noon. Remember that the metal shop, lapidary shop, and faceting shop have mandatory orientations at 9 am each Thursday morning. Be sure to register in advance for any orien- tation in these three shops. Quartzsite Farmers Market open- ing day will be Thursday, October 25th. We will be located next to Kens Grocery at Main Street Ven- dors, 960 West Main St. Organizer Thom Crawford said he is still trying to contact vendors but the produce stand is pretty much a done deal. Crawford is planning on multiple days, some vendors may or may not be available for all open days but produce and others will be. Vendor cost will be the same as last year, $10 per 10 foot space. Vendors fees go to the Quartzsite Food Bank. Cash or check donations will be ac- cepted there as well. So come join us as a seller or buyer- just looking and visiting works as well.
