p. 3 SIGMA PHI EPSILON A s the school year draws to a close, I would like to provide a recap of what Oregon Beta has accomplished in 2018. In January, our new Chapter officers met with the members of our Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) and our regional director to discuss our Chapter vision and set goals for the year. At this daylong meeting, we identified Chapter finances and community involvement as our top priorities, and we have generated specific goals to improve these important areas of Chapter operations. Going forward, we believe that these quarterly AVC meetings in Eugene will surely strengthen our Chapter, as we strive to be the best Fraternity at the University of Oregon. Carlson Leadership Academy In March, nine of our Chapter leaders attended the Carlson Leadership Academy in Los Angeles, Calif., to meet with alumni volunteers and undergraduate leaders from other SigEp chapters in our region. Chapter Counselor Jeff Nolz, South Dakota State '03 was also recognized as the District 24 Outstanding New Volunteer for the work he has already done for Oregon Beta. Our winter term grades were an improvement over the fall and were once again above the men's all-fraternity average. We would like to congratulate Tommy Ainsworth '20 for being selected to attend the Ruck Leadership Institute this summer, as well. Campus and Community Involvement Spring recruitment was a success as we signed 14 new members, putting our spring manpower above 90 as one of the largest fraternities on campus. Our philanthropic backyard carnival event, Sigma Phi Saves Lives, raised nearly $2,000 for the Providence Cancer Foundation—more than tripling our fundraising goal. In April, we took a major step forward in implementation of SigEp's substance-free facilities policy by passing a bylaw that will make living in the house a healthier experience. Effective this July, the common spaces of the Chapter House will be substance-free for all members, alumni, and guests. While this policy may take some getting used to, we understand that this change is necessary to ensure that decades from now, men at the University of Oregon can still be made better by Sigma Phi Epsilon. Balanced Man Scholarship It's not too early to look forward to our Balanced Man Scholarship Banquet this fall. Our banquet has grown dramatically over the last two years and has the potential to be a tremendous recruitment tool. The opportunity to meet with alumni volunteers made a clear impression on the scholarship finalists, and we were able to sign several applicants this last fall as a result. If you are interested in attending or supporting the banquet, or know someone who should apply for the scholarship, please contact our scholarship chairman, Jacob Leonard '21, at jleonar3@uoregon.edu. We hope to see you in the fall! Thank you for all of your support.
