Chapter Eternal Brian Jay Dunlap '81 entered Chapter Eternal on January 25, after a three-year battle with cancer. Born September 14, 1959, he was the second son of James and Betty Dunlap and and a third-generation Oregonian resident of Portland. Brian graduated from Milwaukie High School, class of 1977, then attended the University of Oregon. He graduated with a B.A. in political science and spent four years in the Sigma Phi Epsilon house. Brian spent many seasons following the Ducks with friends and family at Autzen Stadium; win or lose, rain or shine, it was fine. Brian loved the state of Oregon, always reminding his brothers, "Your grandchildren are fifth-generation Oregonians, show them what we have seen and done; that once they have seen this world, they will always come back home." Brian enjoyed camping and hiking at the various beaches and deserts of the Northwest with his brothers, nieces and nephew. Alumni News John Maurice McDonald '48 is still enjoying life at 94! It probably also comes to mind when we think of our time spent at SigEp at Oregon Beta. When we think of camaraderie at SigEp, we think of the memories made with our pledge brothers and how those memories— and those men—made us who we are today. Something that can be even more magical than the companionship of our pledge brothers is how we can share the bond of SigEp with younger, active brothers. Kent Studebaker '67, who lived in the Oregon Beta Chapter House from 1964-66, lives out the values of being a SigEp to this day. When asked to be featured in this edition of the Oregon Beta Heartbeat newsletter, Kent wanted to speak with the undergraduates and renew those relationships. In doing so, it became apparent that the bond of Sigma Phi Epsilon is not just for your college years, but something that spans generations and can be rekindled in nearly an instant. Kent joined SigEp because he liked the attitude of the men he met in the Chapter. When he joined, the Chapter House was relatively new to campus. "Their attitude was to study hard, have fun, and do well in school," he recalls. When speaking to the undergraduates, it became evident to him that this attitude is still in place. Membership in SigEp taught Kent teamwork, integrity, and how to be a hard worker. All of these traits Kent still exhibits today, especially in his role as the mayor of Lake Oswego, Ore. Kent was encouraged by his wife and several coworkers to run for the position of mayor. "You're able to meet lots of new people and know what's going on in the city," he says. "It's interesting, and of course, there's that feeling of making a difference." Kent has been mayor for five and a half years and is currently serving in his second term. The values he learned from SigEp play a role in his position as mayor, but also play a bigger role in life. "I enjoyed my time in SigEp and enjoyed living in the house. You get to be in contact with all types of different people," he says. "You're able to learn from those people but also find out different things from them." Based on Kent's background as a successful businessman, the undergraduates were curious to ask him what kind of advice he would give to graduating seniors. Simply put, he says, "If you take something on, do your best at it." Kent lives in Lake Oswego with his wife and has two daughters. He can be reached at kstudebaker@ci.oswego.or.us.
