Our challenges E nsuring the academic success of our members and assisting the chapter in recruiting and retaining quality men are certainly top goals of our alumni and undergraduates. our facility will be instrumental in achieving these goals by providing a competitive living and learning center that also serves as a symbol of our shared vision of excellence. While our chapter has been successful since our rechartering, we know that a com- petitive fraternity house is essential to being ranked among the best fraternities at indiana University. the house Corporation and alumni association have engaged architects, alumni, and outside counsel to help evaluate plans for our new home. through this work, it has become clear that we must make a major investment to provide a stimulating and uplifting educational experience in a state-of-the-art facility that will distinguish and serve future generations of the SAE family. Gathering Space Without a home, our undergraduates must rely on campus facilities to hold their weekly chapter meetings. at times there are scheduling conflicts that force meetings to be moved at the last minute, and meeting locations are not consistent. a reliable location for fraternity business will maximize the chapter's ability to plan excellent programming to engage the brotherhood and attract new members. We want to create a place where outstanding people want to be! Competition there has been a paradigm shift in the housing market across the country, including at indiana University. today's college students and their parents expect more for their housing dollars. the future of housing at indiana University is this: all remodeling and new construction for upperclassman halls will be single-occu- pancy rooms. Depending on the building, the configurations include suites—where two to four single rooms share a bathroom, small living space and kitchen off a shared corridor —and apartments with similar features but with their own entrances and washer and dryers. Renovated residence halls, as well as new apartment complexes, pull undergraduates and potential new members away from fraternity houses by offering more space and privacy and amenities such as covered parking, on-site maintenance, and convenient household appliances. While we have no intention of providing all of the amenities that other facilities offer, we must offer a safe, attractive, and efficient facility. Safety the safety of our undergraduates is our top priority. With the memories of past chapter house fires seared in our conscience, the new facility must be equipped with life-safety items, such as sprinkler systems and fire-rated doors. Academics and Technology study space and academic needs have changed. a college living facility must include state-of-the-art technology and multiple electrical outlets in each room. the need for quiet, well-lit, and comfortable personal and group study space within the chapter house is necessary for our members to compete academically. the plans will reflect each of these needs.
