Cabrera received 22 of 28 first-place votes and 362 points from the AL panel of Baseball Writers' Association of America to easily beat out Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout, who had six firsts and 281 points. Trout was voted AL Rookie of the Year ear- lier in the week. Posey recovered from a devastating leg injury that cut short his 2011 season, became the first catcher in 70 years to win the NL bat- ting title and helped San Francisco win its second World Series title in three seasons. He got 27 of 32 firsts and 422 points from the NL panel, outdistancing 2011 winner Ryan Braun of Milwaukee, who was second with 285 points. Cabrera hit .330 with 44 homers and 139 RBIs to become the first Triple Crown win- ner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. Lady Bulldogs head to final By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor LOS MOLINOS — The second-seeded Los Molinos Lady Bulldogs volleyball team is earning a few firsts. The Bulldogs' 25-22, 25- 20, 25-18 sweep of sixth- seeded Modoc in the North- ern Section Division V semifinals at home Thurs- day has earned the team its first appearance in the sec- tion finals, a record 35 wins for the program in a season, and a berth into the NorCal championships for the first time. "We were working really hard for this," said Clarivel Castillo, Los Molinos' junior star hitter before her coach, Chas Konopka, gave her a hug. "That was our goal at the beginning of the year." Clarivel notched 15 kills in the match. Los Molinos faced a resilient Modoc squad (18- 13, 9-3 Shasta Cascade League), which played the Bulldogs close in a match that came down to consis- tency and a few momentum shifting plays. A back-and-forth first set, which didn't see a team hold serve for more than three points, saw five lead changes before Los Molinos won 25-22. In the second it was more of the same before Los Molinos, up 21-20, reeled off four straight points on junior Katie Palmer's serve, which included an ace and a crowd-pleasing, energizing dig from Palmer. the set away with a kill. D-VI PREP VOLLEYBALL | Semifinal, No. 1 Mercy 3, No. 5 Redding Christian 2 Lady Warriors earn back-to-back trips to championship game with 5-set win By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer The Mercy Lady War- riors are returning to the Division-VI volleyball championship, but it took a gusty come-from behind win to do so Tuesday night in a semifinal match with league rival Redding Chris- tian. extended the lead to 17-11, but as would prove to be the case all night, it wasn't going to be that easy. Redding Christian got seven straight points behind the service of Cheyenne Johnson and the Lions crawled back to take a 19-18 lead. Mercy won 24-26, 25- 23, 25-9, 20-25, 15-6 in a back-and-forth affair. "It's really exciting," senior captain Kayce Kemp said. "I'm happy, especially for our seniors." After dropping the first game, Mercy found them- selves trailing 5-0 early before coach Zane Zelei called for a timeout. Maddy Coehlo respond- ed with a kill and the Lady Warriors slowly but surely started crawling back into the match. A Breana Kemp ace tied Game 2 at 10-10 and Mari- ah Kingwell followed with a kill to give the Lady War- riors their first lead. An exciting dig by Michelle Jaramillo that floated over the net pushed Mercy's lead to 14-10. Jes- sica Curl's service then involved with an ace and Kingwell aced to regain the lead for Mercy at 20-19. Two points later Julia Misslin provided a set for Fleet to make it 22-20. Breana Kemp extended the lead out to 23-20 and a few minutes later sealed the second game with a kill. In Game 3 Mercy took Ella Fleet then got 3 2 Sports D-V PREP VOLLEYBALL | Semifinal, No. 2 Los Molinos 3, No. 6 Modoc 0 1B Friday Nov. 16, 2012 advantage of a host of Red- ding Christian errors at one point scoring 12 consecu- tive points as Breana Kemp kept pumping in serve after serve.
