2A – Daily News – Friday, April 16, 2010 Community people&events In the military From the Firehouse: Giving back By MICHAEL BACHMEYER Red Bluff Fire Department As a lifelong resident of Red Courtesy photo EW3 Darren Henley, a National Guard Medi- vac Helicopter Pilot, was deployed on March 29, 2010, to Afghanistan for his second tour of duty. He is now at Fort Hood for final training before going to Afghanistan. He attended Red Bluff Union High School from 1977 to 1981 and Shasta College before joining the Army. 31 cent scoop night April 28 Baskin-Robbins in Red Bluff Bluff, at least to this point, I am continuously amazed by the gen- erosity and giving spirit that lives in our community. This is a quali- ty that is not lost on your Fire Department. Each year the Red Bluff Fire Department (RBFD), through the use of their volunteer organization Red Bluff Volunteer Fire Department (RBVFD), con- ducts numerous charitable events to assist local organizations and individuals within our community. However, we would not be able to accomplish such activities without the support of our giving communi- ty. I have seen examples of this giv- ing spirit in many forms. From the donation of turkeys to the Salvation Army during the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas food drive, fund- ing to maintain and preserve the "Not Forgotten" memorial at Main and Pine Streets, and even Fire- fighters giving money from their own pocket to a family displaced from their home by fire. Recently these efforts were will offer 31 cent scoops of ice cream 5-10 p.m.on April 28, as a fundraiser for the company’s $100,000 donation to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Founded in 1992, the foundation honors America's fallen firefighters and their families by developing and expanding programs to recognize fallen heroes and assist their families and co-workers. Select neighborhood Baskin-Robbins shops will invite local fire departments to collect donations and scoop ice cream. During the event, customers can choose any flavor of ice cream and pay only 31 cents. For more informa- tion, visit www.baskinrobbins.com. About a year ago, Captain Dom Catona and Engineer Matthew Shobash approached me with a proposal that would place Auto- matic External Defibrillators (AED) on the high school campus. As many in our community know, the high school is more than an 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. learning institu- tion; it is a site for commu- nity activities including after school programs, sports, and perform- ing arts. Working with staff from the high school and the school district, Captain Dom Catona and Engineer Matt Shobash conducted the research, made contact with AED vendors, and assisted in removing many of the road blocks standing between proposal and reality. Because of their, and the efforts of all involved, the high school is now awaiting the delivery of two AED’s for distribution on campus. The goal of this group is to continue to raise funds for pur- chasing a third machine, as well as a secure, weather-proof cabinet for exterior placement of an AED unit. In the very near future RBVFD will also be presenting the Tom Kinner Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior from Red Bluff Union High School. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a gradu- ating senior who is pursuing a career in the firefighting or medical services. It is an honor for our organization to present this award every year, and a bigger honor to present it in the name of a fallen comrade. However, probably the most sig- nificant charitable event conducted by this group each year is the ‘Boot Drive’. In 2003, the RBVFD joined the American Cancer Society in their fight against cancer by initiating this fund raiser for the Relay for Life. That first year, Fire Department personnel volunteered their time for three hours raising more than $3,000. 2010 will mark the 8th year that the Red Bluff Vol- unteer Fire Department has con- ducted the annual ‘Boot Drive’ fund raiser to support the local fight against cancer. To date, these volunteers have raised $74,273.55 for that fight. This year’s event will be from 9 a.m. to about 5 p.m. today at the intersection of South Main Street and Luther Road. From the Firehouse runs on Fri- days. Michael Bachmeyer is the Red Bluff Fire Department Chief. He can be contacted at mbachmeyer@rbfd.org or by calling the station at 527-1126.
