L’Abri Fellowship conference The internationally known L’Abri Fellowship will present a special, four-day “Thinking and Liv- ing the Way of Christ” conference in Northern Cal- ifornia from Aug. 5-8. The conference will feature nine speakers from L’Abri Fellowship branches around the world. The conference is one of only two in North America this year. The 2006 and 2008 L’Abri Conference Cali- fornia venues attracted attendees from around the world, including Asia. The L’Abri Fellowship International is well- known for providing residential study centers where individuals can seek honest answers to ques- tions about God and the significance of human life. L’Abri is well-known for fostering public discus- sion about where philosophy, art, and culture inter- sect faith. L’Abri is a French word meaning “the shelter.” The 2010 L’Abri Conference California includes a series of lectures and workshops on topics indi- viduals face in today’s world. Topics of the lectures and workshops will include: Challenges to Faith in the Advanced Mod- ern World; Living Sanely When Life is Fired Point Blank; Living in the Creator’s Gift Economy; Can Freedom Last Forever?; Hopeless Ideal or Difficult But Rewarding Obligation and Why We Need Friendship The conference will begin on Thursday evening, August 5, through Sunday noon, August 8, and runs concurrently with a state-wide, curated art exhibi- tion in the L. Frank James Gallery, located in the West wing of the Valley Springs Conference Cen- ter, along with a movie critique night and an evening of jazz with the Manuel Luz Trio in the Global Café. The conference will be hosted by Valley Springs Presbyterian Church, 2401 Olympus Drive, in Roseville. Reviving burned stones This heading comes from a verse in Nehemiah that the Lord gave me years ago as the title to my second book. The remnant of the Children of Israel were rebuilding the wall in Jerusalem. The protective wall had been broken down and burned with fire years ago. As they began the monumental rebuild- ing, their enemies mocked them say- ing, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they complete in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish--stones that are burned?" (Nehemiah 4:2). Have you ever been burned in a relationship? Typically we may react with harsh words, or instantly with- draw within ourselves. We may even make an inner vow such as, "I will never let another person hurt me like that again." These measures are called self-protection. We build walls in our heart to shield ourselves, but they are just a pretense. We cannot really pro- tect ourselves. Oh, we can pretend that all is well, but really we are emotion- ally blocked. What is an offense? It is a bitter root of resentment that works deep in our heart. It jades the way we view life; it taints every motive; it is a weed patch that blotches our character; it is a wedge in our heart that makes us cal- lous and hardened towards reconcilia- tion. An offended person is very prickly to be around, and their words are often barbed. They are irritable and touchy. Hebrews 12:15 says it like this,"Look- ing carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bit- terness springing up to cause trouble, and by this many become defiled." A hidden offense not only affects everything we say and do, but it defiles everyone around us. Our heart can get crushed when we are burned in rela- tionships. Proverbs 17:22 says, "A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones." Proverbs 15:13 says, "A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken." Proverbs 18:14 says, "The sprit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spir- it?" If we continue to wall off our hearts from others, we also block the healing power of forgiveness. Healing forgive- ness brings the past and the present together with no pain, regrets or resentments. It is like liquid gold that has been tried in the fires of life. All the dross from the painful experience has been skimmed off our hearts. The purity is so transparent, that the Lord Himself can see His reflec- tion in our lives and He alone is glorified. The healing for our J. Marilyn Adams GodTalk The Lord uses the difficult relation- ships and heartaches in our lives to purify and shape our character. The good news is that our heart is open before the Lord. He knows all our buried hurts. Isaiah 61:2 says, "...He has sent Me to heal the brokenheart- ed..." He wants to redeem everything in our lives. The fruit of redemption is priceless. You can’t acquire it with money or knowledge. STRONG The Rev. Pat Rush, pas- tor, Visitation Catholic Church: Catholic teaching has consistently acknowl- edged the right of the state to both take the life of a per- son guilty of an extremely serious crime and take appropriate action to protect its citizens from grave harm. However, the ques- tion for today is whether capital punishment is justifi- able under present circum- stances. In recent years, our leaders have answered that question in the negative. The American bishops since 1974 have declared their opposition to the death penalty. They cite the fact that empirical studies have not shown that it is a suc- cessful deterrent to others from committing similar crimes and, therefore, it is not an effective protection for society. They have written that abolishing the death penal- ty would send a message that the cycle of violence can be broken, and we do not have to take a life for a life; that each person cre- ated in the image of God has inestimable dignity regardless of his or her actions; that God alone is the giver and taker of life; and that we can and should imitate the example of Jesus, who taught and practiced the forgiveness of injustice. Popes have likewise opposed the death penalty in recent years. A 2001 Vat- ican document reasoned that God alone knows how much time it takes malefac- tors to reform their hearts, burned heart comes through forgiveness. First we received His forgive- ness for our sins through salvation. We are then free to give that forgiveness to those who have hurt us. Ephesians 4:32 says, "And be kind to one another, ten- derhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." Forgiveness tenderizes our calloused burned hearts and frees us to receive His love in full measure. J.Marilyn Adams is a prayer and jail ministry leader, a published author, and a person who had survived many life threatening situations on the mission field. She is pumped for Jesus in this great Elijah season. Voices of Faith: What is your faith's view of capital punishment? OPPOSITION IS and it is an injustice for us to deliberately shorten that time. KILLING IS THE WRONG REACTION The Rev. Duke Tufty, Unity Temple on the Plaza: Throughout the evolution of spiritual thought, there have been four rules pertaining to the way we treat others. The first is the Brass Rule, also known as the Brazen Rule because it implies we should do what is good for us and disregard the effect it has on other people. The second rule is the Iron Rule. It states an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. If you hurt me, I hurt you back. The third rule is the Sil- ver Rule, which tells us not to do to others what we don't want done to our- selves. The fourth rule is the Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff ABUNDANT LIFE FELLOWSHIP — 21080 Luther Rd. — Pastor J.E. STANISLAUS CATHOLIC CHURCH — 824-5879 Corner of 4th & D — MASS — Sunday 8:00AM - English RED BLUFF Golden Rule, which simply directs us to treat others the way we want to be treated. Each of us has to decide which of these rules we are going to live our lives by, without exception. When I read about hor- rific crimes that result in the taking of another's life, I flip into an Iron Rule mentality. If somebody kills, they should be killed. Yet at the same time, I know for humankind to evolve to its highest potential and for the earth to be a peaceful place, we can't react to killing with killing. It doesn't make sense to have a law that prohibits killing then exact punish- ment by killing. I believe when it comes down to it, isolation and deprivation of community are far worse punishments.
