Congratulations to our 2017 Balanced Man scholarship recipients. page 3 sigma phi epsilon I am happy to report that 2017 has been a great year for the undergraduates of Florida Nu. The men earned an overall 3.17 spring GPA, which placed us in the top three among fraternities. At the SigEp Carlson Leadership Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, the Chapter was awarded the Academic Excelsior Cup over all the chapters in the southeastern area. Also at CLA, our advisor, Karen Katz, was awarded the 2017 Distinguished Volunteer Award for Sigma Phi Epsilon. This award is SigEp's highest honor for a volunteer who is not a member of the fraternity and is given to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and dedication to one or more chapters for at least 10 years. In athletics, Florida Nu finished third in the Sport Cup standings this spring. Philanthropy-wise, we participated in the eighth annual Buoniconti Fund Block Party, 12th Man Camp and in an FIU clean-up after Hurricane Irma with the campus police. The Balanced Man Scholarship applicants doubled this year with a total of 386—a huge success! We narrowed it down to 30 finalists, ultimately giving $1,500 to first place, $1,000 to second place, and $500 to third place. At Conclave in Orlando this year, Brothers Mark Saavedra '18 and Mateo Correa '19 represented Florida Nu. The resolution was passed to completely remove alcohol from our chapter homes by 2020. This resolution seeks to strengthen the SigEp experience by making the Balanced Man Program, not drinking and substance abuse, the focus of our chapter homes. Members also elected a new Grand President and five new alumni and undergraduate members of the National Board of Directors. Newly elected Grand President Chris Bittman, Colorado '85, addressed the assembled brothers during Conclave's closing ceremony. "You must go back to your chapter and take action personally—and set an example for your brothers and show them that you care about them." He also said, "SigEp needs you to go back to your chapter and be someone's hero, because SigEp needs heroes and leaders and champions." The Florida Nus in attendance brought these stories back to the Chapter, making us even more motivated for 2018! Our dodgeball team achieved first place and was this year's intramural champions. Undergraduates proudly supported Ralph Rosado '96 in his run for the Miami City Commission of District 4.
