"I realized during my interview that the board members had a definite vision for the future of the chapter," she shared. Pam is not new to Greek life or the behind-the-scenes work that keeps a chapter thriving and running. She moved from out-of-state to start as Missouri Alpha's housemother at the beginning of the fall 2017 semester, and previously spent eight years as a house director for other sororities and fraternities. When Pam moved into her new apartment over the summer, the space was unfurnished and she had to order a lot of items online. "The minute any boxes were delivered, some of the young men who resided in the Missouri Alpha house would knock on my door and ask if they could help me assemble things," she revealed. "They hung a mirror; they lifted, moved, and assembled my furniture as it arrived." The undergraduates were always quick to lend Pam a helping hand, and assisted her in creating a warm, inviting living space. Conversely, as housemother for the chapter, Pam works to keep the chapter house a comfortable living environment for the undergraduates, so that they can focus more on their academics and fraternity commitments. Making sure the active chapter has whatever its members might need is an ongoing task. "A housemother's role is much like that of a property manager," revealed Pam. "I communicate with vendors, ensure that everything— from lightbulbs to plumbing—works properly, see that the kitchen is maintained, and housekeeping is kept up." She goes a step further to make the chapter house a home, and does her best to learn each member's name and get to know them on a personal level, often inquiring about their post-college goals and plans. She also teaches an etiquette class on top of her other duties, which she says allows her "the opportunity to learn more about each of our young collegians." The most encouraging and inspirational qualities about the active chapter is that it is composed of gentlemen with a zest for their fraternity. "The young men are engaged in the chapter and collegiate life, philanthropy, and social relationships," Pam stated. Their integrity, enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and respect for themselves and others gives Pam hope for future generations of members. When able, Pam loves to travel. She has visited each continental U.S. state, and hopes to eventually see Alaska, Sweden, and the Netherlands. "It is truly an honor to be involved with Missouri Alpha," she said. "The members are quality human beings and I feel blessed." You can connect with Pam at phidelthousemom101@gmail.com. MEET MO ALPHA'S NEW HOUSEMOTHER "The chapter had a mission, and upholding it was important to the brothers." A Young Leader in the Making Chandler Fry '20 on Staying Busy and Being Vulnerable B eing a young adult and a sophomore at the University of Missouri does not keep Chandler Fry '20 from knowing what he wants. He is an ambitious, morally grounded undergraduate and has a sound intuition for knowing when something is right for him or not. After initially pledging another fraternity on campus and determining it wasn't the best fit, Chandler pursued Phi Delta Theta. "The values of Missouri Alpha were more in alignment with how I was raised," he shared. "The chapter had a mission, and upholding it was important to the brothers." When Chandler became a member, ΦΔQ had only just returned to Mizzou's campus and was without leadership, leaving the active chapter with a considerable amount of responsibility. "We've only had one full year with members, but we knew early on how we wanted to make MO Alpha and our chapter house," Chandler revealed. "We are all so different and in different places in our lives, which can sometimes create frustration for us." Still, Chandler understands that combating tough situations can draw people closer, and ultimately, he realizes that each of the active members wants what's best for the brotherhood. With the next round of MO Alpha's executive board elections coming up, Chandler has his sights set on becoming a chapter officer. "Right now, I am the house manager," he stated. "I serve alongside our housemother and am kind of a 'middle man' between the active members and the house corporation board." Chandler looks up to the young men serving on the executive board and respects how they run the chapter, despite the challenge of having to compromise and reach decisions that everyone is comfortable with. He credits Chris Widmer '93 and Chris Crocker '96 with helping out the active chapter, and for providing them with positive feedback. Chandler maintains a busy schedule during the school year; he is a business administration major with an emphasis in management and is very involved in Young Life, a Christian organization. Although he admits he is still trying to figure out how to balance academics, fraternity commitments, and a personal life, Chandler is motivated and optimistic about his future. "In addition to everything else I have going on, I am assistant managet at the HyVee grocery store in Columbia," he said. "I love sticking to a schedule and filling it with as many things to do as possible." After his 2020 graduation from Mizzou, Chandler hopes to work on staff for Young Life, either at their headquarters in Colorado or at one of their camps. He enjoys visiting coffee shops, talking with friends and chapter brothers, and utilizing his spare time by being productive. You can connect with Chandler at chandlerfry@mail.missouri.edu.
