The History of Our Home B uilt in 1960, 729 South Shields Street has always played an integral part in Epsilon Beta's legacy. The Epsilon Beta House Board works hard to regularly maintain and upgrade our home. In 2011, the House Board hired a firm to perform a property assessment of the chapter house. The house was found to be in good shape, albeit with an original kitchen. It was determined that the main common areas of the house needed to be updated in order to remain competitive among CSU sororities and to recruit the very best members to Epsilon Beta. As a result, the House Board and a committee of chapter members strategically planned a multiyear program of house renovations. • In 2012, the House Board invested $250,000 to renovate the main floor. The TV room and dining room spaces were reconfigured and all main-floor common areas were updated with new ceilings, carpet, lighting, paint, furniture, and entry tile. Cupboard storage was added in the hallway, and a set of Kappa formal crested dishes for 200 are now stored where the old phones used to be! • In 2013, EB's House Board continued making improvements by investing $100,000 to purchase new sets of durable furniture for all 56 live-in members. The house director's apartment also received new furniture. • The improvements continued over the summer of 2015. House Board tackled the basement, giving it a complete makeover. House Board invested $225,000 to create a comfortable, well-lit, usable basement for the chapter women. The old study room was split in two; one side is a chapter council/standards meeting room with conference table and sitting area and the other is a study room with individual study carrels. The old chapter room became a theater with a big-screen TV. A bathroom and beverage bar were added. The new basement is a huge hit with both live-in and live-out members. It is used constantly and has had a significant impact on the usable area of the house to accommodate a much expanded chapter size of 235. • Last summer, a new $48,000 boiler was installed. Also, along the way, HB has continued to upgrade the house with a new security system and fire protection, including egress windows in the basement. As a result of the combined efforts of the House Board and the committee of chapter members, the entire house, except for the kitchen, has been revitalized over the past five years! The renovations are tasteful, giving a consistent feel to the house from top to bottom. EB's House Board has been able to do these renovations in a fiscally responsible way. However, there is still work to be done and the following pages detail an ambitious project to renovate and expand our home. Once completed, this addition will allow Kappa Kappa Gamma to continue touching lives at CSU in the same way it touched yours. " " "Kappas are the women who have shown me kindness and given me strength, when I needed it most. They gave me a place to start over whenever I was new in a town and afraid. They believed in me and challenged me to try new things. But most importantly, they were the inspiration for the person I became. From the outside looking in you can never understand it. From the inside looking out you can never explain it. People ask why I am still active in Kappa and I try to explain all the things Kappa is that they cannot see. Kappa is more than letters on a sweatshirt. It is more than songs, a gold key, rituals, or a way of life. Kappa is learning about people... giving without expecting a return. Kappa can't solve all my problems. But I have made good friends and found confidence there to help me take life one step at a time." – Nancy Foehl Potak 1960
