THE CAL SIG ALPHA BETA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY Fall 2017 T he end of August brought the beginning of the school year as 39 brothers filled the 19 bedrooms of our 100-year-old chapter house. We have achieved 100 percent occupancy and all members are enjoying the camaraderie with the full house. Calling the brothers to order is our consul, Justin Nelson '19, and he is assisted by a very capable pro consul, Rohan Singh '19. No sooner had the brothers settled into the house, recruitment week began. Sigma Chi always offers some exciting re- cruitment events and this year was no differ- ent, with a river rafting trip and an outdoor hockey event among many others. Nine qual- ity men accepted bids and were made to feel welcome at the Bid Night Steak Dinner. We are excited to have quite an international pres- ence with our fall 2017 pledge class. Some of these prospective brothers have traveled from homes in England, New Zealand, and Singa- pore to join their fellow pledges here at the University of California-Berkeley. They are an impressive and diverse group and will be a great asset to our chapter once they become members. Under the guidance of their ma- gister, Alec Newcomb '17, they are learning the history and standards that Sigma Chi has stood for since our founding in 1855. For all Sigma Chis, a Saturday in the fall means only one thing: Golden Bear football. Before you make the walk up the hill to Me- morial Stadium, be sure to stop by the chap- ter house and take in some of the pre-game festivities; it is a remarkable sight. Any visit to the chapter house will have you connect- ing with old friends, classmates, and under- graduates. The enduring legacy of Sigma Chi is that you are not only a brother during your four years of college, but rather a member for life. The bonds and friendship of our brother- hood are strong. If you are not able to get by the chapter dur- ing the football season, there are several other brotherhood events throughout the year. The East Bay Alumni Chapter hosts a monthly meeting in Danville and Brother Paul Stella '97 devotes his time to make it a fun evening welcome to brothers from all chapters. Broth- er Don Copeland Jr. '89 organizes the San Francisco Alumni Chapter and likewise they hold a monthly meeting in the city. Brother Tito Rael '76 organizes a night at a Giants game for a group of 1970s era brothers, and has been doing this for over 30 years. The premier alumni event of the year is the annual Big Game Lunch. This year's lunch will be November 17, at Schroeder's Restau- rant in Downtown San Francisco. This is the 35th annual Big Game Lunch and host Ste- ven Rocha '78 always ensures a great event. Steve and his committee work very hard to plan the lunch and we are grateful to Steve and his committee, Ed Glover '79, Charles Wingard '80, and Vincent Rocha '79, for their efforts. I hope that you are having a great 2017 and hope to see you at the football games this year. Go Bears! We are now starting our third semester with the Prepa- ration for Brotherhood program (P4B), following the initiation of 10 new members in the spring. Many are making an impact in the chapter by taking leadership positions.
