This time for submitting a questionable expense voucher for reimbursement of funds used while attending an ABC Board Conference in Asheville, N.C. By the time this newspaper hits the streets, I hope the ABC Board and the Cumberland County Commissioners have done the right thing in dealing with Evans' chronic inability to follow Cumberland County policy and regulations. Let's hope they have cleared up this situation and in a way that reflects authority, style, professionalism and dignity. That's the fair thing to do for Evans, the ABC Board and the residents of Cumberland County. And for heaven's sake let's not bear any more embarrassment by accepting lame excuses for his deplorable and irresponsible behavior. Implying, as some ABC board members have already, that Evans simply made calculation mistakes is ludicrous. Hey! He's a Cumberland County Commissioner for heaven's sake! He is a steward of millions of taxpayer dollars. He is responsible for overseeing, budgeting and fairly dispersing and accounting for taxpayers' money. Trust is something that cannot be suspended or ignored — especially when it comes to our elected officials. My goodness, many people will remember 20 years ago when a wonderful, dedicated and hard working young woman from Fayetteville, who was really the architect of our downtown development, lost her job serving our community and was crucified by local media and in the court of public opinion over a small but transparent credit card indiscretion (one which she openly admitted to and quickly rectified). With Fayetteville's Weather Forecast October 19 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday Thursday October 18 Saturday October 20 Charles Evans on this only lowers the dignity and expectations of the other commissioners and other county employees. After all, Cumberland County employees know such indiscretions on their part would cost them their jobs, or worse, criminal prosecution. I think what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Thanks for reading Up & Coming Weekly. Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? editor@ upandcomingweekly.com. BILL BOWMAN, Publisher, Up & October 21 CalCall 910.354.1679l 910.354.1679 Sunday Monday October 22 that in mind, it baffles me how Cumberland County officials can even entertain turning a blind eye to such recurring violations that virtually drain every ounce of integrity, credibility and dignity from the board. And, for heaven's sake, the Cumberland County Commissioners should not change or alter the county's reimbursement policy just because one person continually violates the very rules and regulations he has sworn to uphold. The county policy is fine. The idea that eliminating travel advances will hurt low- income people from serving local government is also ludicrous. Commissioner Billy R. King is a successful local business owner and he takes advantage of the policy and he's far from low income. The problem is not in the policy. It is in implementation and integrity of those who use the system to account for the money and pay it back — on time. No more excuses. Six strikes and you're out! Evans has proven time and again he is not worthy to provide the kind of leadership we need to grow our county.
